  1. Request for Payload Fall 2014 Innovative System Project for the Increased Recruitment of Emerging STEM Students

  2. Scope of Work: Challenge • Design an autonomous science payload for a UAH-designed spacecraft • Determine the purpose (objective) of science payload • Understand engineering design process • Work on a team to communicate the payload design to evaluation board

  3. Scope of Work: Requirements and Constraints • Europa Jupiter System Mission shall provide • 5 kg of mass • Continuous power onboard the spacecraft • Volume of 44 cm by 24 cm by 28 cm • Access to their data delivery system • Spacecraft internal temperature of 294 K (70°F) • InSPIRESS Teams Requirements and Responsibilities • Must deploy (autonomous) • Survive external environments • No harm to UAH spacecraft • Document payload design & community engagement • Europa Jupiter System Mission Constraints • Europa, Jupiter, or interplanetary space of trajectory • Orbiter, lander, or combination

  4. Scope of Work:InSPIRESS Competition

  5. Scope of Work:Europa CubeSat Study • NASA JPL is interested in studying how CubeSats could be used at Europa • Any team using a CubeSat will have their PCP and FR sent to NASA for further review • No extra points – but pretty cool nonetheless • CubeSats: • www.cubesat.org • Wikipeida

  6. Format Guidelines • Documents • 1 inch margins • No smaller than 12 pt. Times New Roman for main text • No smaller than 8 pt. Times New Roman for table and figure captions • Presentations • Slide numbers on each slide • Arial or Tahoma font for text • No smaller than 16 pt. font • White or light background

  7. Submissions • Upload to InSPIRESS website • http://www.inspiress.org/InSPIRESS/Uploads.html • Requires name, email, high school, & description • Automatic emails sent to uploader and teacher • Please check email – make sure that file was uploaded correctly

  8. Payload Status Review (PSR) • Interface Control Document (ICD) • Outlines the requirements and responsibilities between the UAH and InSPIRESS teams • Project Requirements • Science Requirements • Functional Requirements • Environmental Requirements • Document – no page limit (but don’t get crazy) • Use template • Due September 26th • Signed by all stakeholders

  9. Payload Status Review (PSR) • Community Engagement Activity Plan (CEAP) • Outlines the InSPIRESSteam’s plan for the CEA • Define activity • Location (where it will occur) • How publicized • Expected attendance • Expected accomplishments • Supplies • Schedule • Document (no page limit) • Use template • Due Sept 26th • Signed by all stakeholders

  10. Payload Status Review (PSR) • Presentation • No more than ten (10) minutes in length • Ten (10) minutes for Q&A from the board • Content • Team name, slogan, logo • Science objective chosen • Instrumentation chosen • Functional, environmental, and project requirements • Alternative concepts developed with pros and cons • Payload concept of operations • CEA plan and status • 8th Week

  11. Payload Concept Review (PCR) • Presentation • All members of Design Group MUST present • No more than twenty (20) minutes in length • Q&A for ten (10) minutes from board • Contents • Science objective chosen • Instrumentation chosen • Functional, environmental, and project requirements • Alternative concepts developed with pros and cons • Decision analysis • Payload concept of operations • Engineering analysis • Final design • Compliance table • CEA Summary • Week 14

  12. Payload Concept Proposal (PCP) • Payload Concept Proposal (PCP) • No more than nine (9) pages including title page • Title page: team name, team number, team slogan, team logo, and high school name • Contents • Science objective chosen • Instrumentation chosen • Functional, environmental, and project requirements • Alternative concepts developed with pros and cons • Decision analysis • Payload concept of operations • Engineering analysis • Final design • Compliance table • CEA Summary • Use Template!

  13. Payload Concept Proposal (PCP) • Submission Date • Tuesday, November 25, 2014 • IF proposal is not submitted by this date, the team is DISQUALIFIED • Seriously, disqualified. We don’t like to do it, but we will.

  14. Open House Poster Session • Content: 50/50 Design and CEA • Shelby Center for Science and Technology • Team provisions (provided by UAH) • Easel for poster • 6-foot table to display items • WiFi • Occurs simultaneously with Final Review

  15. Open House Poster • 32 inches by 40 inches • Either portrait or landscape • Printed by UAH if submitted on time • Contents • Team Name • Team Logo • High School Name/Logo • Payload Science Objective • Figure of the Proposed Payload • Number of CEA Visitors and a histogram of the age demographics of those visitors • CEA(s) Description • CEA(s) pictures

  16. CEAR Table • All items brought must fit on table • NO marketing materials (pens, cups, food, etc.) allowed! • Power IS NOT provided

  17. Community Engagement Activities

  18. Open House Poster Session

  19. CEA Visitor Surveys • Visitor – anyone not currently participating in InSPIRESS (this semester) • Collect surveys after EACH CEA conducted • Enter data in spreadsheet provided on InSPIRESS • Spreadsheet MUST be submitted to UAH by December 8th or team is DISQUALIFIED from competing in the Open House Poster Session

  20. Final Review (FR) • Shelby Center for Science and Technology • Each team gets twenty (20) minutes to present • Ten (10) minute Q&A from the board • Modified PCR briefing is used • Please put “Final Review” on the cover slide! • Submit presentation by December 9th • Failure to submit is grounds for FR dismissal
