  4. Definition • Enterprise Portal • “Web software infrastructure providing access to, and interaction with, relevant information assets, knowledge assets and human assets, by select targeted audiences, delivered in a highly personalized manner.”(Gootzit, pg2) Enterprise Portal

  5. Purpose • Enterprise portals were introduced as a better option versus intranet • Intranets would “silo” information making it difficult for users to find and use data • Enterprise portals make data from across the organization accessible in one location Enterprise Portal

  6. Functions • Seamless application integration • B2E, B2B or B2C • Personalization • “push content” • Security • Scalability • Mobility • No local program needed Enterprise Portal

  7. Target Consumers • Business users • Large Companies (1000>employees) • Companies with out dated intranet systems Enterprise Portal

  8. Vendors • Some common vendors include: • IBM WebSphere • Oracle WebCenter, IAS Portal • SAP NetWeaver • Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server Enterprise Portal

  9. Costs • According to an IBM agent, a average implementation of WebSphere will cost between $50,000 and $70,000 • They will typically take 3-4 weeks from purchasing to implement the software Enterprise Portal

  10. Considerations of Portal Implementation • Adoption: Simple to implement and use • Availability: Because they are located on the internet they are accessible remotely • Usability: Ease of use will help with customers, as well as training of employees • Operational Efficiencies: Reduces cycle time for employees Enterprise Portal

  11. Considerations Continued • Automation: User has self service capabilities • Operating Costs: Maintenance will be required on the system leading to more expense • Collaboration: Increases efficiency, decreases travel costs Enterprise Portal

  12. Case Study of Crowley Maritime Corporation • Marine, transportation, logistics services for business and government • Operate world wide • More than $1.5 billion in revenues • 5,000 employees, run 200 vessels • Established since 1892 Enterprise Portal

  13. Why Implement? • Out dated green screen technology • Complicated, customized mainframe applications • Applications were hard to access • Wanted a competitive advantage • IT demands couldn’t be met with old system Enterprise Portal

  14. Benefits of WebSphere • Reduces staffing • Increases customer satisfaction • Customer self-service • Eliminates third-party data transportation • Saves $500,000/year • Decreases training time from three weeks to less than one hour (customer support applications) • Increases agility, accuracy and efficiency Enterprise Portal

  15. Issues • Is not an easy button • Requires patience and money to implement • Company takes a minor hit until the users are comfortable with the system Enterprise Portal

  16. Common Public Web Portals • iGoogle • Yahoo • MSN • AOL • Excite • Netvibes Enterprise Portal

  17. A look into the future • Widgets • Dashboards • Increase mobility • Mashups Enterprise Portal
