F a m i l y S P E C T R U M Our Goals • To promote good practice within Christian communities, congregations and fellowships in relation to marriage and family life. • Respond to the complex issues that arise in this area. • Support church leaders in relation to marriage and family issues including:~ • parenting • marriage preparation • enrichment and restoration • and the pastoral care of those in family crisis

F a m i l y S P E C T R U M Our Goals • To provide specialist input in relation to:~ • Child & child protection issues • Youth leader training • Pastoral training • Consultancy in respect of the management of Schedule One offenders or high risk participants in the congregation • Child protection policy & procedure development

F a m i l y S P E C T R U M Our Goals • To provide pastoral supportand ministry to individuals, couples and church leaders in relation to marriage and family related issues such as:~ • sexual abuse • divorce and remarriage • sexual orientation • mixed faith marriage • fostering • reconstituted families and • single parenting

  5. F a m i l y S P E C T R U M Our Goals • To provide consultancy and training on family and marriage issues at conferences, through publications and other appropriate means • To provide practical assistance to promote and support the well-being of families

  6. F a m i l y S P E C T R U M What do we do? • Family Spectrum provides training and pastoral support on a wide range of issues that may arise for couples, families & churches. • Marriage • Human Sexuality • Disrupted Families • Parenting • Child Abuse

  7. F a m i l y S P E C T R U M Marriage • Marriage preparation & marriage enrichment become more important as our culture loses a Christian understanding of marriage and family life. • Mixed faith marriages & marriage to someone who is not of Christian faith often brings particular stresses.

  8. Our culture is increasingly unclear about the nature of femininity & masculinity, and believes that we create these ideas for ourselves. It can be difficult to show compassion and patience towards those who struggle in these areas The Church is under pressure to follow society in how it responds to issues of :~ Sexual orientation Promiscuity Pornography Internet pornography F a m i l y S P E C T R U M Human Sexuality

F a m i l y S P E C T R U M Disrupted Families • More families are experiencing difficulties as a result of :~ • Addictions • Unfaithfulness • Domestic Violence • The following factors are affecting many homes, leading to reconstituted families with extra issues of rebuilding after hurt and disappointment • Separation • Divorce • Remarriage

F a m i l y S P E C T R U M Parenting • To be able to nurture, discipline and envision our children is a concern of all caring parents. • Some families are able to offer themselves as a resource for fostering or adoption. • Yet there are the special concerns arising in step-parenting and in being a single parent.

F a m i l y S P E C T R U M Child Abuse • We are all now aware of the prevalence of child sexual, physical & emotional abuse, giving rise to • The need for youth leader training in safe practice • We need pastoral training in relation to ministry to:~ • Adults who were abused as children, • And we are increasingly facing the issues of managing and helping sex offenders who come to participate in the local church. • Our policies and procedures have to recognize and respond to all these aspects of the problem.

F a m i l y S P E C T R U M Who are we? • Family spectrum is a registered charity that was founded in October 2004. • The activities of Family Spectrum are headed by Willie Patterson. • Willie retired from the post of Assistant Director for Family & Child Care at the end of March 2004, to set up his own ministry. • His motivation for this arose from his experience over many years of being regularly asked to provide a Christian perspective on a range of family related issues & to advise or become involved in complex situations.

F a m i l y S P E C T R U M Willie Patterson’s Experience • For many years Willie has been involved in providing pastoral care for individuals & families within the context of a local Christian fellowship. • He is currently one of the eldership team in The Barn Fellowships, Ballymoney, Northern Ireland. • He has contributed to the Salt and Light Pastoral Training Programme since its inception in the area of child sexual abuse. • Willie has provided informal consultancy and training in these areas over many years.

F a m i l y S P E C T R U M Willie Patterson’s Experience • Willie has had opportunity to provide similar input through travel to Christian ministries in:~ • Britain, • Ireland, • Kosovo, • Russia, • South Africa. • BSc (Soc Admin) (NUU), Diplôme en Sociologie (ULB), Diploma in Applied Social Studies (NUU), Certificate in Advanced Social Work (Management) (QUB), CQSW Qualifications

F a m i l y S P E C T R U M Directors • Directors provide support, leadership & accountability for the organisation including financial probity • John Mark Mullan, B.Th., M.C.S. • Peter Lynas, B.L., M.Div. • Alison Mark, STL • John GW Matthews, MB, MCh, FRCS • Retired surgeon and church elder • Brian Taylor, PhD, CQSW, MCIPD • University lecturer in social work

F a m i l y S P E C T R U M Support • Many Churches and agencies will be able to pay for all or part of the service provided, however some are not able to do so. • Support for Family Spectrum through prayer and finance given are very welcome particularly to support work in situations & countries were people cannot afford to pay • Family spectrum is accepted as a charity by the Inland Revenue, reference XR82965, which allows for tax relief on donations • If you are interested in setting up a Standing Order or Gift Aid Declaration, please contact us, leaving your name and address. We will be happy to send you the appropriate forms, along with a regular quarterly update for prayer support.
