  2. What?

  3. Discuss • 1. What is writing? • Relating or communicating by forming symbols on a surface with a pen, pencil , or other tool. • The process whereby one records his thoughts and ideas into a visual coded message which can be saved or shared with others.

  4. 2. What is a good writing? • expresses a clear point, • is tightly structured, • is grammatically and syntactically correct, • is substantive, and • is interesting.

  5. How?

  6. Course Description (课程简介) • This course, College English Writing, is required for English majors. Designed for the sophomore, it is purposely divided into two volumes to provide a comprehensive guide to writing skills, from the level of sentence and paragraph to that of essay and practical writing. The course shall be finished in 68 hours in two terms, 34 hours in each term.

  7. Objective (教学目标) • For Level One--- • Use correct format and punctuation; • Select appropriate words accordingly; • Make sound sentences; • Employ the five basic figures of speech; • Construct good paragraphs of unity, coherence and completeness as well.

  8. For Level Two--- • Be aware of difference between English and Chinese writing; • Be able to handle the four types of essay; • Be familiar with outline and abstract writing; • Be skilled in practical writing such as e-mails, letters, and memorandums.

  11. Get ready to polish your writing? • Writing is not an isolated skill, so you need to • Read and listen to English materials as many as possible, for the input helps to enlarge your vocabulary and acquaint you with English culture. It is even more helpful to memorize beautiful expressions, even articles. • Speak English whenever you have the chance, for the output, like writing, helps to establish a habitual thinking pattern in English, which is much different from Chinese.

  12. Broaden your horizon by trying various themes instead of restricting yourself in what you are interested in and good at. • Use E-E dictionaries (paper or electronic). • Personality also counts: • Be determined. Nothing is impossible for a strong will. • Be hardworking. No pains, no gains. • Be persistent. Rome wasn’t built in a day. • Be confident and joyful.

  13. Task • Describe a person who you think is most important in your life. Give your specific reasons. Your essay should consist of no less than 150 words.

  14. The End

  15. What I have lived for                                             ------Bertrand Russell • Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.

  16. I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy—ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of my life for a few hours for this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness—that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what—at last—I have found.

  17. With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine…A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.

  18. Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.

  19. This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.
