  2. Maryland Electronic Learning CommunityDigital Library - Current Status • 5 middle schools (30 teachers) in Baltimore City School System • About 2000 2-3 minute clips (50 hours) of Discovery Communications video digitized and 2000 other resources. • Being expanded across BCPSS high schools

Technology Support for a Learning Community • Teachers at the five schools work together to integrate technology into their classrooms • Multiple channels of electronic communication • Video conferencing • Chat groups • Annotations on items in library • Overall, a success in helping teachers to integrate Web into teaching

  6. Digital Library Should Not be an Isolated Resource • Quick Indexing Tool • Lets teachers insert the own resources into library • Locally relevant content (e.g., OpSail) • Library as authority versus as a bulletin board • Bookshelves • ``Recommendations’’ from community use of recources

Next Steps • Multimedia Open Archive • Coordinate many content providers • Support servers for local content • Support clients in many locations (e.g. schools at low bandwidth) • What type of metadata for educational multimedia • Local/Global strategy • Broad network • Local learning community support
