  1. I Wouldn’t Have Done It Like That! Larry Cline Hardin Valley church of Christ 12-23-2012

  2. 27but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, 28and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, 29so that no man may boast before God.(I Corinthians 1:27-29)

  3. Luke 2 makes no sense to power brokers or marketing experts

  4. The “Foolishness” of the City • Bethlehem – literally means “house of bread” • “But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity.”(Micah 5:2)

  5. “Oh, Little Town of Bethlehem” • Why not: • Jerusalem – • 5 miles north of Bethlehem • Rome – • center of power & influence

  6. 1Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. 2This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. (Luke 2:1-2) Augustus thought he was shapinghistory himself, he was really runningerrandsfor a minor prophet named Micah.

  7. 3And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city. 4Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, 5in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child.(Luke 2:3-5)

  8. The “Foolish” Choice of Parents “…the things that arenot, that He might nullify the things that are…”

  9. The “Foolishness” of the BirthPlace 6While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. 7And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:6-7)

  10. Who cared? • Inn Keeper? • City Officials? • Caesar? • Quirinius? • Herod? • Jewish Officials?

  11. Luke 2:8-208In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. 9And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. 10But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold,

  12. I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; 11for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

  13. 14“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.” 15When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying to one another, “Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.” 16So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger.

  14. 17When they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. 18And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds. 19But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.

  15. “Behold the LambofGod who takes away the sins of the world”(John 1:29)

  16. William Barclay says…“It’s a lovely thought that the musicians of heaven took the place of the earthly musicians and the angels sang the songs for Jesus that the earthly singers could not sing.”

  17. Note who was invited to the birth • Significant? • It’s God’s pattern. • Paul writes later… • “For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble…”(I Corinthians 1:26)
