How to Meet a Counselor • Appointments: ½ hour to 1 hour – Appointments are for future dates and can be made in person in building 1600 or by calling 925-424-1400 • Drop-in counseling: For questions that can be answered in 10-15 minutes maximum • Emergency: If you are experiencing an emergency, notify the counseling assistant and a counselor will assist you

LPC English Language Proficiency Policy Conditional Admission • TOEFL 45 ~ 60 iBT (450 ~499 PBT) • IETLS Academic 5.0 • ESL Assessment test 2A or 2B • Students offered Conditional Admission MUST take: • The required ESL courses in accordance with their ESL Assessment test result • Other academic classes only from the pre-approved list in accordance with their ESL level

  15. LPC English Language Proficiency Policy Full Admission • TOEFL 61+ iBT (500+ PBT) • IETLS Academic 5.5+ • ESL Assessment test 3A, 3B or English 1A • Students offered Full Admission may take: • Any academic classes upon meeting course prerequisites • ESL classes may be recommended

English Language Proficiency Policy – International Student Contract • Page 11 of the International Student Application. • “If I am admitted as a student at Las Positas College…” • I will enroll in the 1 unit PCN 28 course in my first semester. • I will NOT take any online courses during my first semester at the College unless I have prior approval from the International Student Program office.

English Language Proficiency Policy – International Student Contract • Page 12 of the International Student Application. • “If I am admitted conditionally at Las Positas College…” • I will enroll in both required ESL courses at my level as determined by my ESL Assessment test. • I will only enroll in other academic courses that are on the approved list for my level • I will not enroll in any remedial English course (English 100, English 104)

English Language Proficiency Policy – International Student Contract • ISP will monitor your enrollment to maintain compliance with U.S. Immigration and International Student Program regulations/rules. • Use Registration Holds • Non compliance with ISP Contract • Payment • TB • Health Insurance

Attendance • Attendance Requirements • Instructors may drop students who miss: • the first meeting of a course, or • if the student is absent for a total of 4 consecutive or 6 cumulative instructional hours or • 2 consecutive weeks of instruction. • Excessive Absences, Tardiness and leaving class early may be into consideration by instructors in assigning grades. • Check your syllabus for class requirements • Contact Teacher by phone or e-mail if you will be absent!

  21. Important Policies • Pass/ No Pass – all Beginner and Intermediate levels of ESL • Grade Point Average (GPA) – Minimum 2.0 • Limitation on Unit Load – 18 units unless you obtain approval from a Counselor.

  22. Important Policies • Course Repeat Policy • Courses can NOT be repeated if a student has earned a passing grade (A,B, C, or P) • May only enroll in a course 3 times, through a combination of substandard grades (D,F, NP) and W. • May petition to Dean of Enrollment Servicesfor exemption.

Priority Number • Used to determine Registration dates for Continuing students, and adding into classes. • New students have NO priority number! • Based on number of units completed and whether a students has completed the following Matriculation components: • Assessment • Orientation • Student Education Plan (SEP) • Can check Priority Number on Class Web

  24. Types of Classes • Full Term (January 16 – May 25) • Late Start (begins week of January 30) • Fast Track • 1st Session (January16 – March 16) • 2nd Session (March 19 – May 18) • Variable (see page 95 of Class Schedule) • Online Courses • Hybrid Courses

  25. Choosing Classes • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units each semester (Fall/ Spring) • Remember 1 unit = 2 hours or more of study time! • Summer session is optional. Not required to take classes. • May take 1 class, or up to 3 units of online courses as part of your 12 units. • Hybrid classes do NOT count as online courses.

PCN 28 Orientation/ International Students • Required for all International Students during their 1st semester. • 1 unit class – Mondays 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm • The course is designed to assist you in: • Gaining a better understanding of the U.S. Education System • Transitioning to higher education • Becoming familiar with Las Positas College Student Services • Gaining an understanding of U.S. American Culture • Have opportunity to meet with a Counselor once a week – great opportunity!

  28. Registering for Classes • Use Class Web or The ZONE • Username = Student ID (ie W10700712) • Password = Date of birth MMDDYY format (i.e. Lady Gaga’s birthday is March 28, 1986, then her password is 032886)

  31. How to Add classes • Attend the class on the first class session if you are still on the waitlist! Added by position on waitlist first, then “drop ins” by priority number. • Obtain an "Add Authorization Number" from the instructor (a four digit number i.e. “1234”. If seating is available, instructors will add students BY PRIORITY according to the last 4 digits of the student’s priority number, highest number first • Enter your four digit "Add Authorization Number" online via CLASS-Web or The ZONE in the registration menu at www.laspositascollege.edu

Waitlist System • Put yourself on the waitlist if available • Check your spot on Class Web or The Zone • Students added as vacancies become available in order on the waitlist • You will be notified by Zonemail if your spot becomes available • 72 hours to register • Link your personal e-mail account to Zonemail! • Waitlist Video Tutorial at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F998Wg0bNvI&hd=1

  33. How to Drop Classes • Students are permitted to drop courses online via CLASS-Web or The ZONE in the registration menu. • The “No Grade of Record (NGR)" deadline is February 4, 2018 for full-term courses, later for Late- Start Classes.

How much is LPC going to cost? • Tuition - $291 per unit • 12 units = $3,523 (including Term Fees) • Books – expect to pay approximately $400 per semester • Materials fees (for some classes) + • Term Fees - $31 • Student Health Center - $17 per semester • Student Representation Fee - $1 per semester • Associated Students Fee - $10 per semester • Other Fees: • Parking Permit - $30 per semester (if applicable) • Student Insurance – expect to pay about $300 per semester

Paying for classes • Pay tomorrow in Admissions and Records -Building #1600 or in ISP Office (Building #1600) either for units you have registered for OR for 12 units ($3,523) with cash, check, cashier’s check, or money order. No wire transfers acceptedOR • Pay online with U.S. credit/ debit card • Payment is due immediately for any class added after payment deadline.

What do I do if I’m not yet in 12 units? • Consider taking classes at night • Add yourself to waitlist – check Zonemail • Go to the first class! • Tell the instructor that you are a NEW International Student with F-1 visa status – may help with some teachers • Don’t panic – it usually turns out ok!

  45. First Semester Blues • Many classes are full • But….. • It will be much easier next semester as you have early registration date as Continuing students. • Priority Number will also help

U.S. College Academic Expectations • You determine your own academic schedule and manage your own time. • You are responsible for finding out about deadlines, graduation and transfer requirements, and for tracking your own progress. • Plan on spending 2-3 hours outside of class for every hour you spend in class (e.g. if you take 12 units, you will be in class about 12 hours per week; add another 24 - 36 hours per week for study outside of class, for a total of 36 - 48 hours per week for school).

  47. Strategies for Student Success • Know how to select courses and manage time • Be on time and stay for the entire class • Be an active learner (Sit in one of the first three rows, take good notes, ask questions) • Bring textbooks and materials to every class • Read and know the course syllabus • Take advantage of student services, especially Counseling • Use the Library and Tutorial Center • Get to know your instructors (office hours) • Get to know other students (join a club)
