Whatis Live Homework Help? • Innovative after-school program • Internet-based, using instant messaging technology • Online tutors in Math, Science, Social Studies and English for 4th grade through College Intro • For upper grades, Math and Science break down into more specific subjects • Connections from any Alabama public library or remotely from home

  3. Who are these tutors? • Certified teachers, college professors, graduate school students and students attending four-year accredited universities • Also certified through the Tutor.com Training Program • Receive 7-year criminal background check from Kroll Background America

  4. How much does it cost? It is a free service to patrons provided by federal LSTA grant funds through the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Alabama Public Library Service

  5. When can students use Live Homework Help? • Seven days a week • 3 p.m. until Midnight • At any Alabama public library or from home

  6. How long can students use Live Homework Help? • There is no specific limit on session length • Tutors have a target session length of 20 minutes • Many sessions are not that long • If a session runs longer than 20 minutes, tutors will look for a natural resolution to the question and encourage the student to log back in if he or she has further questions • Students can access LHWH as often as they need to; there is no limit on the number of sessions allowed each student

  7. How does Live Homework Help work? • Students click on the Homework Help Icon on library computers • From home students type in www.tutor.com/Alabama • Students type in their zip code

  8. The log-in page • Students are taken to a log-in page • They select the subject they need help in and their grade level • Then click “GO”

  9. The connection • Students are connected with a tutor • If a tutor is not immediately available, students are provided with a visual queue of how long their wait will be • Average connect time = 50 seconds • When a tutor becomes available the student is connected for a live session

  10. What does Live Homework Help look like? • Students are connected with tutors in an online classroom

  11. How to use Live Homework Help • Students type their questions in the dialog box on the left and click the SEND CHAT button. A transcript, including the tutor’s responses will be displayed in dialog box here Students type questions here Session time

  12. The white board is at the bottom The tools menu bar and the session clock are on the left of the white board

  13. How do students ask a question? By typing their question in the dialog box… …or by writing their problem on the white board Students or tutors can add additional boards with the NEW BOARD button, and also switch back and forth between boards

  14. How do tutors respond? By typing a response in the dialog box… Students or tutors can launch web pages in the browser address bar (all web pages are captured in the session transcript) …Or by writing on the white board Note:Tutors and student text will be in two different colors

  15. For more help… • Students can ask their tutor for help -or- • Can click on the HELP button at the top of • the tutor’s dialog box

  16. How does Live Homework Help end? • The student ends the session by clicking on the END SESSION box on the right of the screen on top of the tutor’s dialog box • Students are then given a.survey to fill out
