  4. Determination of The corrosion Rate (CR) of metals by the weight loss is direct and simple but unfortunately, requires longer time compared to other methods. Principles of corrosion By: Enam.M.Ayob

  5. Dissolution of Al in NaOHsolution is accompanied by evolution of hydrogen gas(Gasometric Technique) according to the equation: 2H+ + 2e H2 Principles of corrosion By: Enam.M.Ayob

  6. Equipment and chemicals Equipment: • Mellus cell • Burette & stand • Beaker 1000 ml • Graduated cylinder • Stop watch • Aluminum sample • different grade emery papers (120,150, 220, 400) • Rubber tube Chemicals: NaOH (1M) , Ethanol or Acetone Principles of corrosion By: Enam.M.Ayob

  7. Procedures: • Clean Mellus cell by tap water then by distilled water. • But 50 ml ofNaOH (1M)inMellus cell then fix it by stand. • Connect the Mellus cell with burette by Rubber tube to collect gas as showed in Fig 1 Principles of corrosion By: Enam.M.Ayob

  9. Polish Aluminum sample with different grade emery papers (120,150, 220, 400), then wash by distilled water and ethanol, finally dry it by dryer. • Weight Aluminum sample then dope it in the Mellus cell W1. • Determine the area of Aluminum sample from followed equation: A = 2rL + 2r2 L = length r=diameter • Put the sample in cell, cover it and turn on the stop watch immediately.   12. After 60 minutes, spell the solution then wash the sample by distilled water and ethanol, dry it by dryer finally Wight it (W2) . • Determine the final time (tf). • Calculate the Corrosion rate of Aluminum by Mass loss method from followed equation: Principles of corrosion By: Enam.M.Ayob
