Present limitations • Outgassing affecting MKP • Issue when dump changed: weeks-months required to condition for operation • Options for improvement: • Improved preparation (cleaning, bakeout, …) • NEG chamber in QDA119 • Separated vacuum (completely new design) • Moving dump to another LSS • Robustness of block • Could be big impact on setting up (should also check present situation!) • Options for improvement: • Materials sandwich optimisation (maybe slight degradation of dump absorption possible) • Forbidden zone (29 – 102 GeV) • OK for occasional E_dump - Impact mainly on studies • Not evident to improve • Activation and irradiation • Impact on access, cooldown, lifetime of adjacent equipment • Options for improvement: • External dump for all beams, or for at least high energy beams during setting up

Conclusions and recommendations • It looks difficult/impossible to design an external dump which can accept all beams (aperture limitations for extraction of low energy beams) • Improvements of present system should be continued in the short-term, with regard to TIDVG vacuum performance and MKDV topology/switches • Independently the robustness of the dump block needs improving with a new sandwich structure. This upgrade should be part of the baseline. • An external dump system should also be designed using an existing (LSS4 or LSS6) extraction system, to ease activation and irradiation • The internal dump would still be needed for low energy and E-dump

Actions I: existing system • QDA119 NEG coating: Check feasibility: expected gain in vacuum, time between activations and how to re-activate – F.Velotti with TE-VSC/TE-MSC • Continue solid state MKDV switch development – TE-ABT • Check if recent sparking in MKDV could be TIDVG dust – TE-ABT • Check possibility of a faster sweep for LHC beams – TE-ABT • Update LIU beam parameters for analysis of robustness, including ions and low emittance – M.Meddahi/EN-STI • Study new sandwich structure for LIU beams, and quantify loss in beam stopping power – EN-STI • Inspect existing dump when opened for damage (Al part) – EN-STI • Measure vertical aperture in TIDVG before end of run – K.Cornelis • Investigate possibility of shielding existing dump with marble – H.Vincke

  6. Actions II: new system • Inventory of protons per user (CNGS, FT, LHC, MD), destination and energy – K.Cornelis • Study feasibility of a high-energy dump in the existing TLs – F.Velotti • Complete design study for separate vacuum regions, with full ‘robustness’ analysis of proposed solution – F.Velotti/TE-VSC/BE-OP • Involve RP in material choice discussion, with RP to organise seminar on ActWiz – H.Vinvke/TE-ABT/EN-STI
