  1. USB 2.0 VS FireWire Shadi Agel Pongsakorn Bunyaphriruang Chih-Chung Chang Winnie Chia

  2. Transformation of Back Panel Back Panel before PC99 standard Back Panel After PC99 standard New Back Panel with FireWire and USB 2.0

  3. Different kinds of cables Printer cable BNC monitor cable PS/2 mouse/keyboard extend cable SCSI Cable RS-232

  4. Why did we change? Cost • Specialized production increase cost • Decrease in Price ( Results in only 0.2 cents per printer cable in profit)

  5. Why did we change? SPEED

  6. Why did we change? Convenient • Hot swappable • Plug and Play • Single Connector

  7. USB 1.1 • Introduced in 1995 • Designed to replace every external connector • 1.5 Mbps or 12 Mbps speed • Only requires single IRQ for all devices connected • Hot-swappable • Plug and Play

  8. Weakness of USB 1.1 • Slow speed (Slower than SCSI’s 40Mbps) • Needs CPU to handle control device

  9. USB 2.0

  10. History of USB 2.0 • Developed by Compaq, Intel , Microsoft, NEC, HP, Lucent and Philips on April27, 2000. • Replaced the old USB 1.1 standard. • First product hit the market in Spring 2001.

  11. Feature of USB 2.0(1) • Fully backwards compatible with USB 1.1 • Speeds of up to 480 Mega bits per second • Supports 1.5 Mbps, 12Mbps and 480 Mbps speed

  12. Feature of USB 2.0(2) • Supports dynamic speed changing • Supports multiple speeds in one tree.

  13. USB 1.1 device connection External CDRW The speed limit by previous device 1.5Mbps Keyboard With USB hub Mouse 1.5Mbps M.B 1.5Mbps 12Mbps USB 1.1 HUB External CDRW 12 Mbps 12 Mbps

  14. USB 2.0 device connection External CDRW The speed can be changed if needed 480Mbps Keyboard With USB hub (USB2.0) Mouse 1.5Mbps M.B 1.5Mbps 1.5Mbps 12Mbps 480Mbps USB 2.0 HUB PC camera 480 Mbps 12 Mbps

  15. FireWire

  16. History of FireWire • Developed by Apple Inc. • Replaced AV-cable, coaxial cable, S-video cable • First product hit the market in 1997

  17. Features for FireWire(1) • Digital transmission (AV-cable and S-video cable are transmitted by analog signal) • Speeds of up to 400 Mbps for 1394a • Supports 100 Mbps, 200 Mbps and 400 Mbps speed

  18. Features for FireWire(2) • Only supports peer to peer connection • Hot-swappable • Plug and play

  19. Different kinds of FireWire 4 PIN • Used mainly in consumer electronic industry • Small size connector makes it easy to build on a device 6 PIN • Used mainly in computer industry • Extra 2 pins supply the power to each device • Larger connector makes it harder to break

  20. Configuration • Data is transmitted digitally • Isochronous • Data is transmitted in packet • Arbitrations

  21. FireWire VS USB 2.0

  22. USB 2.0 • Star- tiered topology • Supports up to 127 devices • Hot swappable

  23. FireWire (IEEE 1394) • Tree Topology • No Loop • Supports 64 devices • Hot swappable • Peer to Peer connection Second Peripherals PC First Principles

  24. Advantages of USB 2.0 • Hot-swappable • Supports up to 127 devices for a single computer • Plug and play • Supports multiple speeds (1.5mbps, 12Mbps, 480Mbps)

  25. Advantages of FireWire • Speeds up to 400 Mbps • Supports up to 63 devices • Hot-swappable • Low cost • Operating System (windows 98, windows 2000, windows XP) • Generally accepted by consumer electronic manufactures

  26. Disadvantages: USB 2.0 /FireWire • USB 2.0 • No O.S. native support. • Expensive (for consumer) • Not generally accepted by consumer electronic manufactures • FireWire • Speed of only 400Mbps vs. USB 2.0 480Mbps • Expensive( for consumer and manufacture)

  27. Availability • USB 2.0 • few products available in the market and only in PC. • less than 1% of PC have USB 2.0, but continue to replace USB 1.1. • Not available in Mac. • FireWire • mostly used in consumer electronic (DV, digital Video recorder) • 25% of new computer equipped with FireWire port

  28. Forecast • FireWire (IEEE 1394) • IEEE 1394b: speed of 800Mbps • Next generation 3.2Gbps • USB 2.0 • InfiniBand 1.0: Speeds up to 3Gbps in year 2006

  29. The End

  30. Questions • 1) What were the main reasons for the change from serial, printer, game, and ps/2 ports to the USB 1.1 port? • 2) What are the main differences between USB 1.1 and USB 2.0? • 3) Explain the speed limitations when connecting USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 devices. • 4) What are the main reasons for the development of Firewire and how does it make connecting devices to each other easier? • 5) Explain the differences between Firewire and USB 2.0?
