Purpose • The purpose of this organization shall be to encourage the professional growth and development of Tennessee school library media specialists; to promote cooperation among library media specialists, school administrators, classroom teachers and other persons interested in school library media programs; and to strengthen school library media service in Tennessee. • http://www.discoveret.org/tasl/

  5. How does TASL keep you informed on current issues on a regular basis?

Footnotes • This is the monthly newsletter. • It provides important information on what is happening in the organization • The newsletter starts out with a letter from the president. • There is a section that provides important dates to remember. • All email addresses to important organizations such as ALA, TLA, etc. are provided.

  7. Do they provide opportunities for professionals to meet other colleagues, share ideas, build relationships, and meet experts in the our field?

  8. 2007 Conference Information • The Tennessee Associationof School LibrariansThe 2007 TASL Conference will be heldat the Franklin Marriott at Cool Springs on November 15-17, 2007. • The conference theme is Putting the Pieces Together @ your library. • The keynote speaker will be Dr. Steven Layne. • Other featured presenters include Shutta Crum, Anna Myers, Kathleen Baxter, Henry Cole, and Margie Palatini.

  9. How does TASL encourage other professionals to provide support for Library Media Specialist?

Awards and Scholarships • The Innovative Library Award…. recognizes an innovative program at the elementary, middle, and high school level and comes with a $500 prize. • The Clara Hashbrouck Award…. is given to a TASL member who has demonstrated dedication and commitment to furthering the cause of school libraries in Tennessee by contributing time, leadership and effort to numerous TASL activities over a period of years. • The Administrator’s Honor Roll…. recognizes supervisors, principals, and superintendents who have shown outstanding support for the library media programs in Tennessee • School Library Media Specialist Scholarship… two scholarships for students enrolled in a school media program at a Tennessee college or university that is approved to certify Library Information Specialists.

  11. How can your students become involved in TASL?

  12. Tennessee State Book Awards • The Volunteer State Book Award is sponsored annually by the Tennessee Library Association in cooperation with the Tennessee Association of School Librarians. Each year, children are asked to read books from a list of nominated titles. In the Spring, those students who have read or listened to at least three of the titles from the list are eligible to vote for their favorite. These votes are tabulated and sent to the state organization. The book with the most votes statewide wins the award. The author of the book receives a plaque and is invited to Tennessee to receive the award.
