  1. Geologic Time

  2. Use these two trash pits to explain relative time. What can you infer about the populations in these two areas? Why does the UNO Trash Pit have a line that is labeled ‘Unconformity’?

  3. Background Information • Answer the following questions: • What is the Law of Superposition? • What is the Principle of Original Horizontality? • What is the Law of Cross Cutting Relationships? • Done? Move on to next slide.

  4. Background Information • Write the definitions for the following terms in your notes: • Intrusion • Fault • Dike • Sill • Inclusion • Uplift • Fold

  5. Tis a puzzlement. . . . . What has happened over time? Work with your partner to create an explanation of what occurred in this picture. What is the order of events? Label each rock layer, the fault, and the dike with numbers 1 – 6 to show what happened first, second, third, etc. Where are the inclusions?

  6. Additional Knowledge Needed • What is an unconformity? (Put answer in notes.) • There are three types of unconformities. Write a definition and a sketch for each in your notes.

  7. What is the order of events? Number each layer, intrusion (granite), fault, uplift, erosion, and dike to show the order in which the rocks were formed.

  8. What has caused the rock to bend upwards on either side? What is the name of this rock feature? Did the bending occur before or after the layers of rock were deposited?

  9. What is the order of events? Number each layer and event to show the order in which it occurred. Add an explanation to support your decision.

  10. What happened here? (Include the order of events in your explanation.)

  11. What happened here?

  12. Fossils Add the following information to your notes. • How do geologists use fossils to determine relative age? • What is an index fossil? (4 characteristics)

  13. The three outcrops above, are very far apart. Based on what you see, which fossil is an index fossil, and why? The center outcrop does not have a pink layer. Why?
