  1. Eastern Orthodox Church

  2. Eastern Orthodox & Catholic Similarities • Similar in practice to Eastern Catholic Churches • Maintain apostolic succession • Therefore Sacraments (especially Holy Orders and Eucharist) are valid • Much of the main teachings are the same

  3. Eastern Orthodox & Catholic Differences • Schism - a major break that causes division • Historical Reasons • East and West drifted apart • Different language, culture, customs • 1054 – Dual Excommunications • 13th Century Crusade by the West ended up destroying Constantinople, the capital of Christianity in the East.

  4. Theological Distinctions • Primacy of Peter & the Papacy • Ecumenical council is the highest authority of the Church • Bishop of Rome is “first among equals” but does not has jurisdiction in other dioceses • Other local Churches were also founded by apostles and before Rome.

  5. Theological Distinctions • Focus on the Holy Spirit • problem of filioque- “and the son” in the creed • seen as a subordination of the Holy Spirit below, rather than equal to, the Father and Son. • consecration at Mass • focus on the epiclesis - calling down the holy spirit – the anamnesis, and the entire canon rather than just the words of institution (“This is my body”)

  6. Theological Distinctions • Original Sin • Humans inherit only the consequences (death and concupiscence, tendency toward sin) of Adam’s Sin, not the sin itself.

  7. Theological Distinctions • Salvation • Divinization - sharing in the life of God • West tends to focus on Jesus’ death on the cross as a payback for sin. • Prays for faithfully departed, but does not define purgatory

  8. Russian (Eastern) Orthodox Divine Liturgy • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBXGg-2-lTc • Finish your Eastern Catholic Church Worksheet
