  1. The Scout Oath On my honor I will do my best To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

  2. What is an “oath”? • A solemn promise to yourself & to others • A pledge • A covenant • A binding agreement • A lifetime commitment

  3. What does “on my honor” mean? • Being trustworthy & dependable • Having personal integrity • Being able to judge what’s right & wrong • Always doing what you say you’ll do when you say you’ll do it • Earning the respect & confidence of others

  4. What does “do my best” mean? • Trying your “hardest” • Giving your maximum effort • Keeping going until you’ve done everything & finished the job • Using your best skills, methods & resources • Seeking your “personal best”

  5. What is “doing my duty”? • Keeping your promises • Being truly dependable • Obeying your parents, teachers, & leaders • Being there when you should be to do your assigned tasks • Fulfilling all your agreed-upon responsibilities

  6. What is “duty to God”? • Being reverent to God & respectful in His holy places • Doing your best to always choose what is right • Obeying the moral laws & the Ten Commandments • Recognizing & refusing temptations • Learning to let God guide you

  7. What is “duty to country”? • Obeying its established laws & rules • Striving to be an informed & loyal citizen • Rendering good community service • Preserving its values, resources & heritage • Seeking its well-being, growth & prosperity

  8. What is the “Scout Law”? • “A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.”

  9. How can I “help other people at all times”? • Doing daily good turns • Being cheerful & courteous to everyone • Recognizing the needs of others • Willingly extending a helping hand • Being unselfish in sharing yourself

  10. What does it mean “to keep myself physically strong”? • Eating nutritious foods, a balanced diet, & controlling your weight • Building your body by regular exercise & activities • Refusing alcohol, tobacco & other harmful drugs & habits • Practicing good hygiene to keep well

  11. How can I keep myself “mentally awake”? • Learning something new every day • Setting short- & long-term learning goals • Taking full advantage of all your educational opportunities • Developing your abilities & talents • Reading lots—for information & fun

  12. What should I do to be “morally straight”? • Promise yourself what you’ll “always do” & “never do” • Don’t link sacred words with vulgar expressions • Avoid friends who do wrong things • Recognize & resist temptations • Be honest; never lie, steal or cheat
