  5. Anchored Talk • Page 256-257 • Where are the men, and what are they doing? • What does the diagram show us? • How is the man entering the cavern? • How de we explore places underground?

  6. Listen: • The story “Bartlett and the City of Flames” is about a group of friends who are mapping some caves deep in the earth. • Listen for the words: • Caverns • Chambers • Stalactites • stalagmites

  7. Amazing Words • Chambers- a room inside a cave • We walked around the large chambers with slick, wet walls. • Caverns- large caves • We took turns calling into the caverns to hear echoes. • Teach your partner these words.

Amazing Words • Stalactites-a stone shaped like an icicle, hanging from the roof of a cave • Susan worried that the stalactites would fall from the top of the cave. • Stalagmites- a cone shaped stone built on the floor of a cave • The stalagmites blocked our path to the other side of the cave. • Teach your partner these words.

Cause-and Effect • A cause and effect relationship occurs when one event causes another event,the effect, to happen. • How can I identify cause and effect relationships? • There are certain clue words that are used to signal cause and effect relationships in a selection. • What are some of these clue words? • Let’s look at page EI-5

Cause-and Effect • We are going to read about the structure of our planet. • The first paragraph of the story “Earth” shows a cause and effect relationship. • Scientist didn’t know much about the inside of the Earth (cause), so they invented seismographs (effect). When I see how one thing led to the other, I can identify cause and effect.

  11. Earth • Let’s read “Earth”.

  12. Vocabulary • Armor- protective coverings • The knight was ready for battle under his shiny armor. • Encases- encloses • The rock encases the minerals. • Teach your partner these words.

  13. Vocabulary • Extinct- no longer existing • The dodo bird is extinct. • Hideous-ugly • A bat has a really hideous face. • Teach your partner these words.

  14. Vocabulary • Plunged-moved downward • The bird plunged into the cold water. • Serpent- snake • She saw a serpent coiled up in the tree. • Teach your partner these words.
