  1. Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise Stephen G Davies Royal Glamorgan Hospital

  2. What is IHE? • It is an initiative promoting and supporting the integration of IT systems in the healthcare enterprise. • Integration Goal: Improve the efficiency and effectiveness of clinical practice by: • Improved Information Flow • Advanced Multi-System Functions

  3. Is IHE another term for EPR? • It provides a framework for systems integration which will assist the development of the EPR • Currently limited to radiology

  4. What is IHE? • Currently we have: • DICOM to exchange imaging data • HL7 to exchange order and lab results data • IHE aims to facilitate the integration of data between systems • IHE defines the use of subsets of DICOM and HL7 standards – it is not a standard itself

  5. How does this help? • Improves integration and interoperability • Integration – disparate systems share info. reducing multiple data entry • Interoperability – two systems can carry out a task effectively e.g. both systems have two fields for first and second name • Simplifies workflow • Purchasers and vendors have confidence that systems will work together

  6. Scheduled Workflow Admit, order, schedule, acquire images, notify of completed steps Key ImageNotes Access toRadiologyInformation Patient Information Reconciliation Exchange flaggingsignificant images Consistentaccess to images andreports Unknown patients and unscheduled orders Simple Image andNumeric Reports Exchange simplereports with image links and, optionally, measurements Presentation ofGrouped Procedures Subset a single acquisition ConsistentPresentation of Images Hardcopy and softcopy grayscale and presentation state IHE Integration Profiles • Integration profile = integrated work flow process

  8. IHE Documentation • IHE Technical framework • IHE Scenarios • IHE Technical implementation guide • Provides a guide to buyers and implementers of IT systems to explain the IHE documents • Facilitates specification in the procurement process • Resources • www.rsna/IHE • www.IHE-uk.org

  9. The structure of IHE • Joint initiative RSNA and HIMMS based on success of DICOM and recognising the need to look wider than radiology • Year 4: national profiles for IHE • IHE in the UK

  10. IHE Scenarios and UK Clinical Radiology • Working party including practising radiologists and radiographers • RCR guidance • IRMER • Generic approach rather than reflecting every local variation • Terminology still in IHE speak

  11. IHE the future • UK initiative consolidated • UK-IHE • UK IHE Demonstration at UKRC 2003 planned • More integration profiles • More countries involved • Outside radiology • Framework for EPR
