Now that we have discussed what is on-campus interviewing, we are going to discuss how to properly prepare for interviews.

  2. How do I prepare? • Before submitting your resume, have it critiqued by Career Services. • Schedule a practice interview. • Check for new job and internship postings weekly starting in the beginning of each semester. • Research the employer and position prior to the interview. • Obtain appropriate formal business attire for your interview. You can gather a lot of this information through company literature such as website materials, annual reports, brochures, and fact sheets. It is also critical to obtain appropriate clothing to wear for the interview to make the best possible impression. Over the course of the next couple of slides we will discuss specific resources and methods to accomplishing each of these goals. Employers expect candidates to have a properly constructed resume and strong interviewing skills that encompass employer specific knowledge and research. Before you choose to interview, comprehensively evaluate the employer information to ensure you are well-informed. If you plan on taking part in the on-campus interviewing program, it is important to be adequately prepared to make the best possible impression to employers before, during, and after the interview.

A resume is a concise, complete document that outlines your unique work-related education, skills, accomplishments, and experience. Its purpose is to generate the interest of a potential employer to secure you an interview. Remember your resume is your first impression to the employer.

  4. Interviewing • Prepare for upcoming interviews by scheduling a practice interview with a career counselor. • Utilize InterviewStream and a webcam to practice your interviewing skills from home. Login to BullsEye to access the software. • Check out the interviewing section of the Career Services website at ub-careers.buffalo.edu. Another opportunity to practice your interviewing skills, from the comfort of your home, is through the use of InterviewStream. The software allows you to utilize the webcam on your computer to answer hundreds of sample interview questions. You can even create your own customized practice set. You can log into the BullsEye system to access InterviewStream. The login procedure will be discussed in a couple of slides. If you are selected for an interview, it is important to make sure your interviewing skills are up to the standards expected from todays’ top employers. An interview is your opportunity to personally present your qualifications to a potential employer and demonstrate that you are the best candidate for the position. To accomplish this, you must show that your past experiences fit the desired qualifications and that you have a solid understanding of the position and organizational needs and culture. The best way to prepare for an upcoming interview is to conduct a practice interview with a staff member from the Career Services office. We will videotape your response and allow you the opportunity to see how you look from the perspective of the interviewer. As mentioned with resumes, students and alumni can also take advantage of the interviewing section of the Career Services website ub-careers.buffalo.edu.

  5. Dress for Success • As a rule of thumb always dress conservatively and professionally. • Although "business casual" may be appropriate for daily wear in the workplace, such dress is inappropriate for an interview. • Consult resources for how to dress at ub-careers.buffalo.edu. It is always crucial to come to any interview in proper business attire. Employers begin to form an opinion of you as a candidate based on the way you present yourself as soon as you walk into the interview. This includes both the way you are dressed, and your overall appearance. You should always plan to dress conservatively and professionally. While the work environment with that particular organization may be relaxed and business casual, this is not appropriate for an interview setting. Utilizing the resources on the interview section of our website can help guide you through the proper dress and appearance for both men and women.
