  2. FUNDING • Since financial year 2002/2003 (4yrs) funding provided from ORS for projects specific to new arrivals has totalled $315k (grants and special initiatives) • Small amounts of funding from other Govt departments also (OFY)

  3. MAIN RECIPIENTS OF $$$ • Migrant Resource Centre SA – subsidy, linking and promotion • Multicultural Communities Council SA – sporting organisation development, promotion and linking • SA Amateur Soccer League – teams and individuals into SAASL with assistance from MRC • Basketball Association of SA – Introductory activities and social competition • Adelaide Secondary School of English – After school sport program-introduction, promotion and linking • Taekwondo Australia – City of West Torrens Library program • Indoor Soccer Australia – Accessible indoor competition • Lutheran Community Care – Community development

ORS DIRECTION TO DATE • Consultation with support agencies and individuals • Organisational education and awareness – development and delivery of cross-cultural awareness training for sport and recreation organisations • Linking – sport and rec providers to support agencies, promotional avenues • Project planning

  5. DEVELOP AND SUPPORT PROJECTS THAT: • Overcome barriers – cost, transport, culturally sensitive • Offer accessible, welcoming environment • Provide an introduction to sport • Educate participants, families and sporting orgs. • More recently – community development

MODELS OF PARTICIPATION • Segregated introductory programs – soccer clinics • Integrated introductory programs – Ingle Farm PS • Creation of new segregated and integrated accessible, low cost, competitions (Indoor Soccer League, SAASL tournament, 3-ball) • Teams competing in social-based competition – BASA NAP • Integration into mainstream competitions both as teams and individuals

CHALLENGES • So many complex barriers and issues for participants • Groups wanting to form their own clubs and teams – very expensive and resource intensive • Linking participants from introductory activities to ongoing participation • Sporting organisations lack of human resources, particularly coaches

LESSONS LEARNT • Taking the activity to the participants significantly increases chance of success • Support agencies and sport and recreation providers must work together • Community development at a local level is needed to increase participation in community based sport • Rome wasn’t built in a day – development takes time, particularly when addressing complex issues • A variety of options are important – from fully flexible to structured competition requiring ongoing commitment

FUTURE DIRECTION • Community development model – Sporting Chance – documenting and learning • Education of participants/families and support agencies – sporting system, why sport is important • Cross-cultural awareness for sporting organisations • New Arrival Program school survey • Further work with SSO’s and their clubs that are keen, welcoming and accessible – promote them specifically • Continued linking and networking
