  5. Pan’s Labyrinth takes the form of a subtitled foreign film. Whilst with most films delivered through the medium of cinema, the purpose is to make money, del Toro’s motivations for making Pan’s Labyrinth stretch beyond that of simply making profit. Del Toro’s mission in writing, producing and directing Pan’s Labyrinth, was based on his desire to create a film where he had the complete artistic freedom and control to realise his purist vision of the film, something he had failed to achieve with other productions and films, such as ‘Mimic’, which he described as a “literally the worst experience of [his] life, above the kidnapping of [his] father (because the film was)…severely compromised by producer interference.” This idea is further evidenced by the fact that del Toro gave back his entire salary in order to get the film made the way he wanted when funding from the films financers let him down. So clearly, the most integral purpose of the film for del Toro personally was an exercise in failing to conform to the restrictions imposed by other institutions involved in the production of a film and therefore to have his own vision for Pan realised. This could account for just how dark and sinister the tone of the film is because del Toro fails to compromise. The film itself can not simply be classified as one particular genre, sharing codes and conventions from many. Therefore it is appropriate to state that Pan’s Labyrinth is a hybrid genre. The poster for the film helps to secure its roots in the fantasy genre, whilst it is evident upon watching that it shares conventions from the Horror and Gothic genre . Firstly it is important to establish why Pan’s Labyrinth is rooted within that of fantasy.
