  3. Education and Service • Attended 2 schools • Xaverian College • University of Manchester • Graduated with a degree in English Literature • 1940 • Served in Royal Army Medical Corps & Army Educational Corps • 1940-1946

  4. First Wife • MarrriedLlewela “Lynne” Jones • In Bournemouth • Sergeant and musical director of an army dance band

  5. WWII • Stationed in Gibralatar, Spain • Army Educational Corps • Taught a course to troops • ‘British Way and Purpose’

  6. After the War • Moved with Lynne to Adderbury • Taught at Banbury Grammar School • Wrote his first two novels • A vision of Battlements • The Worm and the Ring

  7. Malaya • Burgess and Lynne moved to Kuala Kangsar • A collection of poems and “A Vision of Battlements” were both rejected • Taught as an Education Officer at the Malay College for the English Colonial Service
