  1. The Ocean Floor • OBJECTIVES • 1. Describe technologies for studying the ocean floor. • 2. Identify the two major regions of the ocean floor. • 3. Classify subdivisions and features of the two major regions of the ocean floor.

  2. What technologies are used on the Ocean Floor? • Sonar (sound navigation and ranging)- determines ocean depth by sending out sound impulses and bounces off the floor and the time is calculated to determine depth • Oceanography-Satellite focused on the ocean and send images back to Earth to measure the direction and speed of ocean currents • Geosat- Military satellite that can map the oceans floor.

  3. Revealing the Oceans Floor • Continental Margin is made up of continental crust and deep-ocean basin is made up of oceanic crust

  4. Revealing the Oceans Floor (cont.) • Continental shelf- start at the shore line slopes gently toward the open ocean • Continental slope- Begins at of edge continental shelf continues to flattest part of ocean • Continental rise- base of the continental slope made up of large piles of sediment • Abyssal plain-broad flat part of the deep ocean covered in mud and remains.

  5. Revealing the Oceans Floor (Cont.) • Mid-Ocean Ridges- Mountain chains thqat form where tectonic plate pull apart causes cracks that call rift zones . Magma risescrust expands and forms ridges • Rift valley- between the rift zone as mountains form • Ocean Trenches- Huge cracks in the deep-ocean basin. Form 1 oceanic plate is pushed beneath continental plate or oceanic plate • Seamounts- individual mountains of volcanic material. Magma pushes through plates if to goes above sea-level its called a volcanic island

  6. Assignment • Draw the Ocean Floor (8 points) • Label the ocean floor 8 labels (8 points) • Explain all 8 labels (8 points) • Color your drawing (8 points) • Total 32 points
