  4. Explore • Students will predict and record which of the three substances will be able to retain heat.

  5. Explain • All groups then share their data and experiences. • Students then graph temp/time on a graph for all three substances. • Explain the interplay between atmosphere, land and water impact Earth’s climate, weather, and general circulation of the Earth’s atmosphere.

  6. Elaborate • Give each group a cup with an ice cube and challenge them to insulate the cube so that it lasts as long as possible under the heat of the lamp.

  7. Evaluate • Ask students to think back to the chocolate ball on the sidewalk video. Ask them to design and sketch packaging that will protect a piece of chocolate from the heat of the sun. They will need to include a materials list and reasoning behind their design.
