What do we mean by wellbeing? • Increasing international attention to this term • No agreed upon definition (yet) • Not necessarily equated with physical or mental health • Working definition (Ryffet al, 2006, p. 87): “Active engagement with the existential challenges of living” • involving autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, positive relations with others, purpose in life, self acceptance, feeling included, interested, alert, enthusiastic, inspired, determined, active and attentive

  3. Why museums and galleries? They are socially inclusive, accessible, public places Learn about ourselves and others Consider our aesthetic likes and dislikes Gain knowledge about different cultures and times Help clarify our thinking, perceptions, and understanding To stir the emotions Encourage public engagement

  4. A very brief list of activities and projects Nord-Trøndelag Health Study, Norway Hackney Local Authority Museum, London Philadelphia Museum of Art ‘Accessible Wellness Workshops’ New Walk Museum, Leicester Dulwich Picture Gallery, London ‘Good Times Programme’ (RSPH Arts & Health Award, 2011)

Viewing Together Project: Dulwich Picture Gallery and Nottingham Contemporary Gallery Involved 14 people with a dementia and their 14 family or professional caregivers 8 week duration at both galleries, 2 hours per week Combined viewing art in the gallery followed by making art in the studio Goal: to increase quality of life for PWD, reduce carer burden and stress, increase wellness, encourage new learning
