Summarize Chapter 1 for one dollar. Summarize for $1.00: Explain this strategy by telling students they should pretend they can spend up to $1.00 to purchase words with which to write their summary. Each word is worth five cents; therefore, they may use no more than 20 words to write the summary. Have students make a small book in which they will write a summary for each chapter of The Giver.Simple directions for making a book:1. Give each student 3 sheets of plain paper. 2. Fold the paper in half "hamburger style" and cut along the fold line. 3. Fold the two half-sheets of paper in half "hamburger style."4. Add a cover made from half of a sheet of construction paper. 5. Assemble into a book format. 6. Summarize one chapter on each page of the book. 7. Extra pages at the back of the book will be used to write an epilogue.
