Newton’s Laws

Newton’s Laws. 1. What is Newton’s 1 st Law of Motion?. An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. 2. What does this mean?. If an object is not moving, it will not move until a force acts on it.

  1. Newton’s Laws

  2. 1. What is Newton’s 1st Law of Motion? • An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

  3. 2. What does this mean? • If an object is not moving, it will not move until a force acts on it. • If an object IS moving, it will not stop until a force acts on it.

  4. 3. What is inertia? • The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion. • The more mass, the more inertia!

  5. 4. What is Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion? • Acceleration depends on the net force acting on the object AND on the object’s mass or

  6. 5. What does this mean? • Acceleration and force are directly proportional…the greater the force, the greater the acceleration. Small push small acceleration Big push big acceleration

  7. Acceleration and mass are inversely proportional…the greater the mass, the smaller the acceleration. big acceleration small mass big mass small acceleration

  8. The forces will be equal when the truck crashes into the car. Which will accelerate faster after the collision? Explain.

  9. 6. What’s Newton’s third law of motion? • Action-Reaction • For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction

  10. Examples: Rocket! Reaction Action

  11. Action Reaction Rowing!

  12. Walking Action Reaction

  13. Action Reaction
