Department of Developmental Services Consumer Advisory Committee Vision Statement: “People with developmental disabilities in California will live their life the way they want” The DDS Consumer Advisory Committee started in 1992 by the Director to give consumers a voice about how they receive services.

  2. MAKING MY OWN CHOICES The CAC created Making My Own Choices and the Sticker Book to help people have a choice in their life. They said …A life without choice means someone else makes decisions about how you spend your time, like you do and when you do it. Each person has the right to make decisions and have choices. …Learning to make your own choices can be hard if you have not been in charge before. Sometimes when people begin to make choices, staff and family do not listen because they are not comfortable with us making our own choices.

  3. MAKING MY OWN CHOICES • The interview team will spend time with every resident to find out: • How people want to live • once they leave the developmental center, • things people like to do.

Residence Supervisors-will be working with Cathy on scheduling and selecting a staff person who knows the resident well.Staff attending interviews- to support resident during the interview process. Share their knowledge about the resident’s day-to-day personal preferences. ROLE OF STAFF IN INTERVEIW

Why is this information helpful? -Can be used for an assessment by the team members during the IPP/transition process.-Focus area from the resident’s point of view during the IPP and/or transition meetings.-Ensures the resident is involved in some aspects of their transition.-Gives important people in the resident’s life an opportunity to reflect on the pleasant parts in life that make a person feel unique.
