  4. Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed • Isaac & Rebekah • Jacob & Leah & Rachel • 12 sons, 2 or more daughters • Joseph

  5. Genesis 41:1 • 1 Two full years later, Pharaoh dreamed that he was standing on the bank of the Nile River. • Two full years after what?

  6. Context • Genesis 40: Joseph interprets dreams for the Pharaoh’s cup bearer and baker while in prison • Genesis 39: Joseph thrown in prison after being falsely accused of seducing the wife of an Egyptian officer • Genesis 37: Joseph irks his brothers and they sell him into slavery, and tell their dad he is dead.

  7. Genesis 41 • Pharaoh’s Dreams (2-7) • Dreams were one way God chose to reveal his plans • Magicians and Wise Men were not able to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams • Cup-bearer Remembers Joseph (9-13) • Joseph is summoned (14-15)

  8. Joseph Responds to Pharaoh Genesis 41:15–16 15 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream last night, and no one here can tell me what it means. But I have heard that when you hear about a dream you can interpret it.” 16 “It is beyond my power to do this,” Joseph replied. “But God can tell you what it means and set you at ease.”

The Lord was with Joseph… • “the Lord was with Joseph, so he became a successful man” (39:2) • “the Lord was with him” (39:3) • “the Lord caused all that he did to prosper in his hand” (39:3) • “the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house on account of Joseph” (39:5) • “the Lord’s blessing was upon all that he owned” (39:5) • “the Lord was with Joseph and extended kindness to him” (39:21) • “the Lord was with him” (39:23) • “whatever he did, the LORD made to prosper” (39:23).

  10. Luke 15:1–2 1Tax collectors and other notorious sinners often came to listen to Jesus teach. 2 This made the Pharisees and teachers of religious law complain that he was associating with such sinful people—even eating with them!

  12. Luke 15:18-24 18 I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, 19 and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant.” ’ 20 “So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.

  13. Luke 15:18-24 21 His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.’ 22 “But his father said to the servants, ‘Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet. 23 And kill the calf we have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast, 24 for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.’ So the party began.
