  1. Design Issues FEEDSCAMP

  2. (Choosing the most appropriate manufacturing methods (Selecting the best materials to manufacture the product) Production Materials (What is the product designed to do?) Function Aesthetics Ergonomics (Designing a product to look good and appeal to possible buyers) (Designing the product to suit human use) PRODUCT DESIGN ANALYSIS Cost (Designing the product to be good value for money) Environmental concerns (Designing the product to be friendly to the planet!) Safety Durability (Designing the product to be safe to use) (Designing the product to be long lasting)

  3. S2 Product Design Analysis Unit • The design of any product is based around 8 main design issues, these are as follows: • Function / Ergonomics / Environmental Concerns / Durability / Safety / Cost / Aesthetics / Materials • We can remember these factors by using the term FEEDSCAM • Your first task is to analyse a product (chosen by your group) using these FEEDSCAM issues. This example is a kettle. • The question you want to ask yourself while you are writing your analysis is: What did the designer have to think about (within each FEEDSCAM issue) when designing your product? • Using the questions below complete each FEEDSCAM area of your Product Design Analysis. Try to work as a team in your group and plan how you are going to complete each FEEDSCAM issue section.

  4. S2 Product Design Analysis Unit Function (What is the product designed to do?) • Write down the main (primary) function of the product. Does the product have any other (secondary) functions? • The kettle could boil water in a reasonable time. It could hold a good amount of water, enough to make around eight cups of tea/coffee. (This is about 1.7 litres)

  5. S2 Product Design Analysis Unit Ergonomics (Designing the product to suit human use) • Write down as many human considerations as your group can think of that designer had to think about when designing the product. • It should have a handle to fit most hands. Left and right-handed users could use it. It could be easy to carry / fill / pour / empty / clean.

  6. S2 Product Design Analysis Unit Environmental Concerns (Designing the product to be friendly to the planet!) • Write down the environmental considerations that the designer had to think about when designing your product. • It could be made of a recyclable material. It could be designed to be easily recycled.

  7. S2 Product Design Analysis Unit Durability (Designing the product to be long lasting) • Write down the possible durability dangers your product would have to withstand during its life. Try to think about the lifespan of the product. • It could last around two years or more. If the cost is high you should get a long lifespan out of the kettle. It could be able to withstand being dropped onto the kitchen floor. It could be waterproof and withstand high temperatures.

  8. S2 Product Design Analysis Unit Safety (Designing the product to be safe to use) • Write down the safety concerns your group think the designer had to consider when designing your product. • When pouring boiling water the kettle should not burn or scald the user. The temperature of the kettle body should not get too hot and burn the user. Any electrical safety issues should be considered because of the water used in the kettle.

  9. S2 Product Design Analysis Unit Cost (Designing the product to be good value for money) • Write down the cost considerations the designer had to think about when designing the product. • The overall cost of the product should be within the budget of most families. If the cost is too high some potential buyers will not like the kettle. It is best to balance quality against price and life span.

  10. S2 Product Design Analysis Unit Aesthetics (Designing a product to look good and appeal to possible buyers) • Write down the ways in which your group think the designer has made the product attractive to potential buyers. • The choice of a colour scheme that makes the kettle fit into most kitchens will be made. It could probably be white or silver. A modern curvy shape and cylinder type form are good possibilities. Modern materials could be used for their looks.

  11. S2 Product Design Analysis Unit Materials (Selecting the best materials to manufacture the product) • Write down what the chosen materials have to be able to do to make the product perform its function effectively. • Materials that are able to work in hot and damp places would be a good choice. Water resistant materials are good for this also.
