  1. Sheep meat value chains in Ethiopia Planning Meeting September 2011 Team Meeting ILRI Addis Ababa 1-2 June 2012 CGIAR Research Program 3.7

  2. Ethiopia • Human population: 73.9 million (2.6%/yr) • Area: 1,221,480km2 (density ~ 71 persons/km2) • AEZs: ~18 major types • Highly contrasting • Influenced by altitude (126 m.a.s.l. to 4620 m.a.s.l.) • Huge biodiversity

  3. Ethiopia GIS map

  4. Afar • Altitude: 565-1542 m.a.s.l • Hot to warm arid plains • Pastoral/agro-pastoral • Large herd/flock sizes • Communal rangelands – no private land • Seasonal feed shortage • Controlled breeding • Utility: Milk, meat

  5. Bonga • Altitude: 1070-3323 m.a.s.l • Wet, humid • Mixed crop-livestock • Animals mostly tethered (private grazing land; no communal grazing) • Mating controlled • Ample feed resources • Utility: Meat

  6. Horro • Altitude: 1450-3210 m.a.s.l • Wet, humid • Mixed crop-livestock • Ample feed (if crop residues & aftermaths are utilized) • Grazing area: communal + private • Utility: meat

  7. Menz • Altitude:2500-3563 m.a.s.l • Cool highland • Sheep-barley system • Heavy ecological degradation • Shift in production system towards sheep • Utility: meat, wool

  8. Menzas example of on-going R4D efforts AssessmentS InterventionS Breeding program Ram selection (twice/yr) Health Strategic deworming Forage development Fattening Cooperatives formation Training • Production systems • Breed characterization • Market study • FEAST, TechFit, VCA

  9. Sheep and feed value chain analysis in the central highlands of Ethiopia By: Beneberu T., Lemma H.Y., Shenkute G., Aschalew T., and Solomon G. Debre Birhan Agricultural Research Center, Debre Birhan, Ethiopia ILRI, Addis Ababa, 28-29 May 2012

  10. Sheep VC actors and major channels Identified channels for sheep marketing CH 1- Sheep purchased for breeding/ fattening purpose by farmers CH 2- Sheep purchased by hotels and individual consumers in the study areas CH 3- Sheep transported to Addis Ababa butchers , supermarkets and consumer markets CH 4- Sheep slaughtered at Modjo export abattoirs (Luna)

  11. Feed VC actors and major channels Identified channels for feed marketing CH 1. Crop residue purchased for nearby town dairy production CH 2. Concentrate purchased by traders and cooperatives for distribution to farmers (rearing/fattening/dairy)

  12. Partners

  13. Projectproposals • Developing long-term sustainability strategies for community-based breeding of indigenous sheep in Ethiopia: ADA- rejected • Strengthening institutional platforms for participatory actions towards sustainable sheep production in fragile ecosystems in Ethiopia: DfiD- rejected • Improving the livelihoods of smallholders through implementing community-based sustainable improvement programs for adapted indigenous sheep breeds in Ethiopia: USAID • Holistic resource management of communal areas to enhance the livelihoods of resource poor livestock keepers in Ethiopia: BMZ • Community-based sheep breeding: up/out scaling options for improved meat production in Ethiopia: Funding source to be identified • Improving the performance of pro-poor sheep value chains for enhanced livelihoods, food and nutrition security in Ethiopia: IFAD CN

  14. Ongoing projects • ELF (nearly completed) • USAID Africa Rising- quick wins • QuickFeed • ICARDA Legumes • NARS research • SARI: CBBP up/out scaling • IPMS/LIVES

  15. Outcomes of discussions with IPMS/LIVES • Agreed on a small project to test genetic improvement building on IPMS interventions at two sheep IPMS sites (Atsbi and Goma) with remaining funds • LIVES: participatory selection of main commodities with all stakeholders as in IPMS – sites where sheep (and goats) are the main commodity have been mostly decided • Potential role of ICARDA team within LIVES: • Work with VC and Livestock international experts and national team employed by LIVES to identify priority interventions in sheep and goats value chains • Technical backstopping of breeding and management interventions (substituting part of the 50% SR expert position?) • Support in capacity development and knowledge management related to sheep (and goat) management

  16. Issues for discussion • Clarification on priority sites in view of new project proposals • New sites vs ongoing • Healthy combination of the two would be useful • LIVES sheep commodity sites = CRP3.7 VC sites ????? • Roles and responsibilities of CG centers • Funding opportunities
