  1. ADP, ATP and Cellular Respiration

  2. Engage: Let’s Recap Photosynthesis • Plants absorb sunlight and use its energy to grow directly. • Autotrophic plants use chloroplasts, and the process of photosynthesis, to capture the energy from sunlight and store it by creating sugar (glucose) molecules. • Write out the chemical equation for photosynthesis. Using the magazines supplied, cut out pictures/symbols that can represent the reactants and products of photosynthesis.

  3. However… • It is important for you to realize that photosynthesis alone can not sustain life. • Plants, or other living things, can not stay alive if this was all that happened. Remember, glucose is like a storage house for energy, storing the chemical energy obtained from the sun. • How is all of this energy released from storage???

  4. EXPLORE: CELLULAR RESPIRATION • Respiration releases the chemical energy stored in glucose, which is used by the cells to carry out their life activities (growing, moving, etc.). • Create a labeled diagram showing how photosynthesis and respiration are related using pictures cut out from a magazine.

  5. Sunlight (radiant energy) is Transformedthrough the process of Photosynthesis in Green Plants Transforming the radiant energy into GLUCOSE (chemical energy) which can be Respiredby Plants & Animals to Transform chemical energy Into other forms Required to continue living.

  6. Respiration is NOT the same as what we call breathing! Respiration is a chemical reaction… Write out what you think the equation for respiration looks like. RESPIRATION

  7. What Is ATP? Energy used by all Cells Adenosine Triphosphate Organic molecule containing high-energy Phosphate bonds

  8. Chemical Structure of ATP Draw This ! Adenine Base 3 Phosphates Ribose Sugar

  9. What Does ATP Do for You? It supplies YOU withENERGY!

  10. How Do We Get Energy From ATP? By breaking the high- energy bonds between the last two phosphates in ATP

  11. When is ATP Made in the Body? During a Process called Cellular Respiration that takes place in both Plants & Animals

  12. Overall Equation for Cellular Respiration C6H12O6 + 6O2 YIELDS 6CO2 + 6H20 + e- + 36-38ATP’s

  13. Where Does Cellular Respiration Take Place? • It actually takes place in two parts of the cell: Glycolysis occurs in the Cytoplasm Krebs Cycle & ETC Takeplace in the Mitochondria

  14. Diagram of the Process Occurs across Cristae Occurs in Cytoplasm Occurs in Matrix
