  3. As this happened… • Joann Robinson and NAACP organized a boycott of the buses. • Montgomery Improvement Association which was lead by MLK Jr. • MLK Jr.-pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church

  4. * ALL blacks in Montgomery refused to take the bus, even though it may cost them their jobs * For 381 DAYS, under the guidance of MLK Jr., they persevered

  5. Nonviolent Resistance “soul force”

  6. * SCLC: Southern Christian Leadership Conference (1957).* Presided over by King, with 100 ministers and CR leaders.* Led by Ella Baker, who organized the grassroots efforts for non-violent protests.

  8. * SNCC: Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (1960) * A group set up by Baker to get college students involved with peaceful civil rights work! * More confrontational than the SCLC

  9. CORE helps SNCC * SNCC would become one of the most active student groups in US history * CORE gave them ideas, like the “sit-in” and staying persistent with the protest despite violence
