  3. Why? The growth of the Chinese economy and the emerging links between the UK and China will lead businesses to increasingly demand employees with these skills.

  5. Why? • If you are a student in Years 8 to 12, you could take part in a sponsored British Council or Specialist Schools Trust immersion Course to Chinain July 2009. You could go to China in July 2010. • During the 2 week immersion course you will stay in an international school and meet with Chinese students and students from schools across the U.K. • You will experience a completely different way of life • Widen your horizons • Improve your C.V. : YOU are never too young or too old! • Letters will go out to students in the Spring term. • Talk to Miss Beuzit if you want to find out more.

  7. Why? The study of wider-world languages such as Mandarin Chinese contributes to an enhanced understanding of cultural traditions in the UK and wider international communities. Learning Mandarin Chinese is an exciting and enriching opportunity for students across the age range.

  9. Why? BBC business reporter Mary Hennock says students speaking fluent English and Chinese are going to be the executives of the future. "China's economy is growing so quickly and becoming so influential in the world economy that people can't afford to ignore it. People who want to be ahead in whatever industry need to think about China and learning Chinese."

  11. Why? Sir Terry Leahy, Chief Executive of Tesco says: 'If we want to forge real, lasting relationships with China, we can’t sit back and expect everyone to learn English. After all, who would you rather do business with? Someone who has made an effort to come to the U.K. and understand our traditions and culture? Or someone who doesn’t seem interested in finding out what is going on and what makes local people tick? So we Brits have to make the effort to learn Mandarin.”

  14. Interested? The MFL department offers extra-curricular Mandarin Chinese lessons and provides tuition for Mandarin Chinese at G.C.S.E. Talk to Miss W.Gordon, E12 if you would like to join the class.
