  3. EUKN in short • EUKN connects existing urban knowledge centres and networks • EUKN offers knowledge of high quality Target group: practitioners, decision- and policymakers EUKN: one stop-shop for end-users!

  4. Background • Start: ministerial conference Rotterdam 30 november 2004 • 15 member states, European Commission. URBACT and Eurocities • First steps through URBACT

The network connects 15 Member States, EUROCITIES and URBACT • Launch 27 October 2005 • 15 NFP websites • English website & multilingual search • 500-700 visitors per day • > 300 knowledge documents • Themes: • Urban environment • Housing • Transport and infrastructure • Economy: knowledge & employment • Social inclusion and integration • Security and crime prevention

  6. Organization • EUKN-secretariat: website, support national focal points, etc. • National Focal Points: ‘a binding pin’ in each member state.

  8. Content EUKN- 3 types of documents 1. Best and proven practices 2. Research results 3. Policy documents All documents are validated, contain templates in English and provide contactinfo of relevant policymakers and practitioners

Planning and future steps • The building blocks have to be put in place in the right order to make the EUKN a solid structure. • Sponsors, National Focal Points, the structure, and technology are the base. • With these blocks the EUKN can offer services, collaborate with other networks and facilitate communities with experts. • Once successful, the EUKN can have an impact on the political and the research agenda and become self-sustainable • Once a block is in place, it will grow further while other blocks are realised. Top 5 priorities Q1 + Q2 2006 • Strengthen the National Focal Points; • Expand the current knowledge base with high quality documents; • Communicate EUKN as a useful tool for urban professionals; • Offer additional services on the current website; • Knowledge exchange with validated networks.

  12. To conclude: With the EUKN we can benefit European collaboration and stimulate the succes and competitive position of European cities through the exchange of relevant and sustainable urban knowledge and experience.
