2 Different Meanings

  • An action that reflects back on the subject.

    -Yo me lavo

    I wash (myself)

    -Ella se levanta

    She gets up.

    2. An action in which 2 or more subjects interact.

    -Nosotrasnosreunimospor la tarde.

    We get together in the afternoon.

    -Ellas se miran.

    They look at each other.


  • I wake at 9:00.

    Yo me despierto a lasnueve.

  • He showers at 3:00.

    Élse ducha a lastres.

  • We dress at 4:00.

    Nosotrosnosvestimos a lasseis y diez.

What to do…

If the verb that is reflexive is part of a verb phrase and isn’t conjugated, add the reflexive pronoun (me, te, se, etc.) to the end of it (the verb).


  • I want to eat breakfast.


  • He is going to dress himself.

    Élva a vestirse.

  • We are going to stay.

    Nosotrosvamos a querdarnos.

Reflexive vs. Non-reflexive

Dormirse= to fall asleep

  • I always sleep 8 hours.

    Siempreduermo 8 horas.

Dormir = to sleep

  • I almost always fall asleep when I study.

    Casisiempre me duermocuandoestudio.

Reflexive vs. Non-reflexive

Ponerse = to put on

  • I put on my shoes.

    Me pongo los zapatos.

Poner = to put or to place

  • I put the shoes in the locker.

    Pongo los zapatos en el armario.

Reflexive vs. Non-reflexive

The meaning of the sentence can change if you use the reflexive pronoun.

  • Using the reflexive pronoun expresses a reciprocal action

    -the idea of each other.


  • Llamo a mi amigo.

    I call my friend.

  • Mi amigo y yonosllamamos.

    My friend and I call each other.

Reflexive vs. Non-reflexive

  • With non-reflexive the subject does the action to someone or something else.

  • With reflexive the subject does the action to itself.

Where do they go?

  • Put reflexive pronouns before conjugated verbs.

  • Attach reflexive pronouns to affirmative commands.

  • Put reflexive pronouns before negative commands.


Model: Me voy a bañar. -Sí, bañate.

  • No me puedocalmar. -Sí, ______.

  • Nosqueremosacostar.-No, __ ________

  • Yo _____

  • Mi hermano ______

  • Mis padres ______

  • Tù _____


  • Sí, calmate.

  • No, se acuesten.

  • Yo --> me

  • Mi hermano--> se

  • Mis padres --> se

  • Tù --> te

Reflexive Pronouns Before Conjugated Verb or Add to Infinitive

  • Ella (quedarse) va a quedarseor se va a quedar

  • Tù (reunirse) te vas a reuniror vas a reunirte

  • Ellos (ocuparse) se van a ocuparor van a ocuparse


Reflexive pronoun before conjugated verb or use ir + a + infinitive

  • Nosotros (divertirse) __________ or vamos a divertirnos.

  • Yo (acostarse) ________ or me voy a acostar.

  • Él (levantarse) _________ or va a levantarse.
