  2. Elements of the Royal Law • What? – Love • Who? – Your neighbor (Luke 10:29-37) • How? – As yourself

What is the Royal Law? • Based upon Leviticus 19:18 “You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself;” • Requires one to love his neighbor • Hebrew – same word for “friend” • Must demonstrate love (agape) to all he comes in contact with. • The standard: As one loves himself

  4. How is it the Royal Law? • Chief of all laws (Matthew 22:34-40) • “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul , and with all your mind.” (v.37) • “The second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (v.39) • It originates from the King of kings!

  5. How is it the Royal Law? • It is the law that governs and defines all other laws • Ten Commandments • First 4 focus on loving God • No other gods before Me • No graven images (idols) • Do not take the name of the Lord in vain • Remember the Sabbath day

How is it the Royal Law? • It is the law that governs and defines all other laws • Ten Commandments • Last 6 focus on loving our neighbor • Honor your father and mother • Do not murder • Do not commit adultery • Do not steal • Do not bear false witness against your neighbor • Do not covet your neighbor’s house, wife, slave, etc.

How is it the Royal Law? • It is the law that governs and defines all other laws • New Testament • “Love one another” (John 15:17) • Do not be angry with your brother (Matt. 5:22) • Do not make false vows (Matt. 5:34) • Do not resist an evil person, but turn the other cheek (Matt. 5:39) • Love your enemies (Matt. 5:44) • Do not forsake the assembly (Heb. 10:25) • Speak to one another in hymns, psalms and spiritual songs (Eph. 5:19) • Go into all the world (Matt. 28:19)

  8. Why does James bring this up? • We have to practice this one first! • “If you are fulfilling the royal law…you are doing well” • Not “learning” well • “doing” – 16x in James • Christians must “DO” the will of God.
