Valeriano (“Butcher”) Weyler • February,1895, - Cuba • Spanish send Valeriano ("Butcher") Weyler to Cuba to put down Cuban rebellion • Cuban towns turned into concentration camps, rebels are tortured. Newspaper publishers Pulitzer and Hearst print sensational stories to boost circulation. This came to be known as the "Yellow Press."

  3. Mckinley • November,1896, - US • McKinley elected president • There was two campaign promises: 1) Protect American business and 2) Freed the Cuban people.

  4. Dupuy de Lome • February,9, 1898,- New York Journal • Negotiations between Spain and U.S. Broke down after insulting letters from Spanish ambassadors was published • Dupuy de Lome had written that President. McKinley was "weak and a wanna-be politician." He resigned, and though American people are angered

  5. U.S.S. Maine • February 15, 1898- Havana Harbor • U.S.S. Maine was blown-up • 260 American sailors were killed after mysterious explosion. Yellow Press called for war against Spain ("Remember the Maine"), offer rewards for proof of Spanish plot.

  6. Abmiral Dewey • February, 25, 1898, - Washington D.C. • Assistant Secretary Theodore Roosevelt ordered Admiral Dewey to prepare for the Asian war • Roosevelt told Dewey to attack the Spanish fleet in the Philippines if a war brakes out between U.S. and Spain.

  7. God Has Told Me • April,11, 1898, - Wahington D.C. • President McKinley asks Congress to declare war on Spain • Although Spain agrees to all American demands, McKinley tells Congress that God has told him to attack the Spanish forces.

  8. Dewey Sinks • May,1, 1898, - Manila Bay • Dewey sunk Spanish fleet. • In only seven hours, the entire Spanish Asian fleet was sunk. U.S. suffers only one death.

  9. San Juan Hill • June, 1898, - Santiago, Cuba • Roosevelt's Rough Riders take San Juan Hill • Roosevelt achieves heroic stature for leading men (sans horses) up hill overlooking Santiago Harbor.

  10. Spanish Caribbean Fleet • July, 3, 1898 • Southern Cuban Coast • Americans destroyed Spanish Caribbean fleet • Every Spanish warship was sunk as the fleets tries to run to open sea.

  11. Filipino War • July, 1898-1902 • Philippine Island • U.S.-Filipino War • Led by Emilio Aguinaldo, Filipinos fought Americans for independence. Effort fails and Philippines stayed under American control until captured by Japan in 1942.
