  3. Activity • Assess your current qualities as a school counselor. • Divide a piece of paper into two columns. One column should be labeled “Current Qualities” and the other labeled “Aspiring Qualities.” • Write down a variety of qualities under each column and compare.

Qualities of an Effective Leader • Adaptability • Social Awareness • Assertiveness • Cooperation • Responsibility • Diplomacy • Originality • Honesty • Fairness (Dollarhide & Saginak, 2012) • Creativity • Imagination • Flexibility • Courage • Passion • Training • Vision • Strength • Commitment

Roles of a Leader • Build relationships with students, staff, parents, and community members • Develop and communicate the comprehensive school counseling program • Promote and provide developmental curriculum to be used in the classroom • Develop and write a vision and mission statement for the school counseling program (Dollarhide & Saginak, 2012)

  6. 5 Types of Power • Reward Power • Coercive Power • Legitimate Power • Expert Power • Referent Power (Dollarhide& Saginak, 2012)

  7. REWARD POWER Power to provide benefits perceived as valuable to the follower (Dollarhide & Saginak, 2012)

  8. COERCIVE POWER Power to impose punishments or remove benefits as perceived by the follower (Dollarhide & Saginak, 2012)

  9. LEGITIMATE POWER Power that is used when the follower perceives that the leader has the right to make the request and the follower has the obligation to comply (Dollarhide & Saginak, 2012)

  10. EXPERT POWER Power that occurs when the follower believes the leader has the expertise, knowledge, or training that will result in desired outcomes (Dollarhide & Saginak, 2012)

  11. REFERENT POWER Power that is used when the follower’s admiration, liking, desire for approval, or identification with the leader prompts compliance (Dollarhide & Saginak, 2012)
