Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Company, selected a New Bedford waterfront site for its largest branch- a rail depot, coal scuttle, and land-sea junction of ships and trains.

Contributions to the U.S Jobs Provided Employed 9,700 seaman Provided jobs including;shipbuilding, sail making, outfitting, in fitting, provisioning, cordage manufacture, pump and block making, iron mongering, flour milling, oil refining, and spermaceti candle manufacture etc. Products Produced Spermaceti- candles Whale oil- food, lubricant, Sperm oil- lubricant, soap, light source Baleen- specialty items such as dishware, canes, corsets, instruments etc.

Management and Ownership Management Hierarchy of officers and crew; captain, officers, boatsteereers, harpooners, cask makers than ship keepers Crew members were paid a percentage of the profit depending on their status Ownership 1838 rail link to Taunton and Providence gave New Bedford a competitive advantage on Nantucket. New Bedford had 64% of the whaling tonnage New Bedford had 59% of the American value catch

Impact Internationally The whaling zones are organized by species and population Many whaling ships traveled to artic to hunt whales Nearly Half of the worlds whaling was from New Bedford At the beginning of the whaling industry crews were drawn from African, British, and Native American heritage Later immigrant workers came from Azores, Cape Verdes, and Portugal .
