Plagiocephaly Plagiocephalydescribestheflatteningononesideonthechild’shead.Thistypeofflatteningiscommonlyassociatedwithaparallelogramshapedhead,ashiftforwardoftheearandamoreprominentforeheadonthesamesideastheflatteningandpossiblytheeyesappearingtohaveunequal positioning. Brachycephaly Brachycephalydescribesaflatteningacrossthebackofachild’shead.Thistypeofflatteningiscommonlyassociatedwithalossofdefinitionoftheneckline,awideheadshape,prominentbonylumpsabovetheears,abossed/protrudingforeheadandpossiblyanexcessivelyhighheightofhead. Scaphycephaly Scaphycephalyistherarestofthethree.Itdescribesaflatteningonbothsidesofachild’shead,givingtheoverallimpressionofalongnarrowheadshapeandisassociatedwithanoverlyexaggeratedneckline. Theflatteningoccursduetoanexternalforceexertedontothechild’sheadforaprolongedperiodoftime.Duetothesoft,malleable,mobilecharacteristicsachild’sskullhas,theexternalforce,whenleftincontactforalengthoftimecancauseaflatteninginthecorrespondingarea. Statisticsshowthatin1992theincidenceofPlagiocephalywasapproximately1in300,comparedwith1999wheretheincidencehadincreasedtoapproximately1in60children.ThereforeintheUnitedKingdomin2009,therewere706,248babiesborn,ofwhichinlinewiththestatistics,11,770babiesbornin2009hadaformofdeformationalplagiocephaly. EarlydetectionanddiagnosisplaysavitalroleinthemanagementandtreatmentofPlagiocephaly.ItiscrucialtounderstandandrecognisethefactorsinfluencingtheflatteningsotobeabletoreducethemtoslowdownandhopefullyhalttheprogressionofPlagiocephaly.
