  1. Always Do Your Research Properly Always Do Your Research Properly Models and those working in the entertainment industry know – or should know – that they will only get good work if they are successful in terms of the talents and/or skills they offer the company or organisation looking for what they have. Managers, designers, producers, and directors find the people they want to work with by advertising for the jobs that are available. This they do via the press, via their own website, but most often with the help of agencies that represent these entertainers – or models. These agencies advertise what the producers are looking for and inform them of the available individuals. This, therefore, creates the opportunity for producers and directors to meet with those individuals they may consider for the job(s) they have available whether that is for a model or an actor, dancer or singer, for example. These people are then invited to attend an audition or casting where their looks or abilities are considered. Therefore, it is really important for those working as models or entertainers to always be prepared when they are called to a casting. Models should always arrive with a portfolio of pictures and a CV of what they have done in the past to support their application. But, individual circumstances will always differ – also in terms of what directors and producers are looking for. It is good to know upfront who you will be auditioning for, what kind of company they are, and what jobs they normally offer. This way you prepare yourself and you are ready to put your best foot forward. The same is true, of course, for the actor and actress. Make sure, beforehand, you understand the requirements and that you offer those skills that the director – or producer – is looking for. These professionals are often quite busy and you do not want to miss out on a good opportunity just because you arrived ill-prepared. Take your CV with, somebody and headshots done by a professional photographer and prepare before the time any text, or lines, your director would want to listen to if that was part of the preliminary brief. Expect the person you will meet to test your abilities, to want to make sure you are their best candidate. This may mean that you will be exposed to a stressful situation because there are other candidates too; however, be natural, dress according to the brief or what would be suitable – guard against overdressing, or too much makeup for example - and give it your best. Although castings for modelling assignments will differ from those for actors and singers and other performers, they will all expect from those that attend to be sharp, at their best, communicative and natural. Castings or auditions will also differ in terms of what is expected of the client that arrives for the audition – or casting. At times the producer or director may expect of those that they see to either be still or to perform – or simply be interviewed.

  2. It is therefore always important to understand that your personality may be a deciding factor since many that attend castings are talented, or beautiful or popular. The casting that you attend will dictate what is expected of you. Therefore, do some research before the time about the company or organisation whose casting you will attend. Find out what their expectations are and what they are looking for. A good starting point is to have yourself registered with a good talent management agency, for example. They know their clients and also those firms that are looking for what you may offer. Some of these companies offer a great experience and are well placed to offer good jobs and introductions – also great opportunities for their clients to be able to attend castings and auditions.
