  13. Do every job, everyday, safely, on purpose!

  14. Injuries will take care of themselves!

  15. Theme • Shift focus to thousands of positive actions vs. limited number of safety failures

  16. Goals • Focus on positive actions vs. negative outcomes • Reinforces personal commitment • Engage/empower employees • Stay focused on working safely • Promote continuous improvement • Engage/involve supervisors to provide feedback to employees on a continuous basis • Acknowledge positive actions and opportunities for improvement on a real time basis • Provide Leadership on Purpose • Recognize and reward positive safety performance

  17. ASK 3 QUESTIONS • Do I know how to do the job safely? • Am I prepared to do the job safely? • Training, team, tools, time, • Can I do it safely? • A “no” response requires: • Seeking additional information, taking a positive action, or shift supervisor involvement

  18. SOP Notebook • Put in pocket at the start of every shift – physical reminder And ask the 3 questions before performing each task

  19. SOP Notebook Employees record at least one positive action taken to promote safety (PS Actions) in their notebook each day Carry the notebook every day as a reminder that they can do every task, every day, safely on purpose

  20. Safety Communication Whiteboard

  21. Pre-shift Safety Briefing • Employees share their SAFETY ON PURPOSE™ Notebook entries with their Supervisor during the pre-shift safety briefing at the beginning of the next workday. • Start everyday by summarizing positive actions to promote safety (P.S.) in one location • Supervisor writes P.S. Actions on Safety Communications Whiteboard • Record at least one item from each employee’s notebook and discuss with shift - engage • Review work for the day • Review safety issues involved with tasks

  22. Recognition • Recognize and reward positive safety performance • Evaluate and recommend at least one PS action each week by forwarding the relevant information Hampton • A team of employees selects one or more PS actions for company wide recognition • All selected PS actions are published on a weekly basis

  23. Promoting Safety (PS) Actions – 2007 Falls – Pre-Job Briefing Pays Safety Dividends! • Steve Miller - Mechanic. Steve observed a standing water hazard that could not be removed while completing his Safe Job Briefing for a welding task. Steve modified the job set up to stay out of the water preventing a possible injury. Mike Tedesco, Lead Mechanic. – Alan Lewis

  24. PS Actions – 2007 Frackville – Watchful Eye Prevents Chemical Leak! • While assisting with a sodium hypochlorite delivery, Joe Yak – Utility Operator noticed liquid starting to drip at the hose connection. Joe immediately stopped the delivery and replaced the rubber gasket. This action prevented a possible leak. Thanks Joe. – Tim Porczynski

  25. PS Actions – 2007 Lassen – Engineering Away Back Strains! • Boyd Barney/Plant Operator: - Boyd recognized the need to install a rail hoist to move oil barrels weighing about 500 pounds, both in and out of the oil storage containment area. This will eliminate the need for the staff to manually move the barrels eliminating potential back strains. A work order for this item including engineering (load capacity) has been submitted and Boyd is working up interim measures until the installation is complete. Boyd’s use of SOP helped him not only to identify the hazard, but to put measures in place to eliminate them. – Larry Lighthill/John Neil

  26. PS Actions – 2007 Shasta – Taking Safety Home! • Kay Hutsell/Fuel Specialist: Kay is organizing the Family Safety Day that will be held in the near future. For the event she has put together a family safety guide to be handed out to all attendees that includes a family emergency plan, family safety guide, disaster readiness, chemical and poison safety, fire safety, child safety and a safety checklist. Her intent is to carry safety awareness to the home as a part of SOP – Larry Lighthill/John Neil
