  1. Unit 8 Book 2 Focus on Global Warming John Weier Shanghai Finance University

  2. Have you noticed? OUR WORLD ARE CHANGING!!! OUR CLIMATE ARE CHANGING!!!

  3. Montanas Glacier National Park. When the park was created in 1910, it had 150 glaciers. Now it has 30 glaciers, significantly reduced in size.

  4. They’re SUFFERING!!! Look!

  5. Male, the capital city of the Maldive Islands in the Indian Ocean. With a maximum elevation of only 8 feet (2.4 meters), any rise in sea level is likely to engulf currently inhabited ground.

  6. A hurricane-damaged homein Gulf Breeze, Florida.

  8. Warm-Up Global warming basics What is it? Global warning is gradual increase in the earth's surface temperature. How is it caused? Carbon dioxide and other air pollution collected in the atmosphere is like a thickening blanket, trapping the sun's heat and causing the planet to warm up.

  9. Discuss what you know about global warming? • Signs of global warming • The reasons of the global warming. • The harmto our earth. • What you can do to reduce greenhouse gases.

  10. Spreading disease Coral reef bleaching Heat waves and periods of unusually warm weather Downpours, heavy snowfalls, and flooding Glaciers melting Earlier spring arrival Plant and animal range shifts and population declines Sea level rise and coastal flooding Arctic and Antarctic warming Droughts and fires GLOBAL WARMING: Early Warning Signs http://www.climatehotmap.org/ Fingerprints and Harbingers

  11. Climate Pattern Changes • Consequence: warmer temperaturesAverage temperatures will rise, as will the frequency of heat waves. • Consequence: more intense rainstormsWarmer temperatures increase the energy of the climatic system and lead to more intense rainfall at some times and in some areas. • Consequence: drought and wildfireWarmer temperatures could also increase the probability of drought. Greater evaporation, particularly during summer and fall, could exacerbate drought conditions and increase the risk of wildfires.

  12. Health Effect • Consequence: deadly heat waves and the spread of disease More frequent and more intensive heat waves could result in more heat-related deaths.

  13. Warming Water • Consequence: more powerful and dangerous hurricanesWarmer water in the oceans pumps more energy into tropical storms, making them more intense and potentially more destructive. • Consequence: melting glaciers, early ice thaw and sea-level rise

  14. Ecosystem Disruption • Consequence: ecosystem shifts and species die-offThe increase in global temperatures is expected to disrupt ecosystems and result in loss of species diversity, as species that cannot adapt die off.

  15. Part I. Introduction of the whole text Questions to be asked: 1. Tell the main idea of the first two paragraphs. 2.Why have people shown increasing concern about global warming? (Copenhagen Climate Conference, in Dec. 2009)

  16. peruse • Applicants should peruse the instructions before completing the forms. perusal noun.

  17. Esoteric geopolitical magazines • Esoteric language /articles • Geopolitics: the study of how politics is affected by geographical factors

  18. attest verb. • [I] To give proof that something is true The luxurious furnishings attested to the family’s wealth. • [I/T] To declare or state that something is true, correct or right A witness who will attest (to) the signature.

  19. The subject has become as rooted in our public consciousness as Madonna or microwave cooking.

  20. deserve • If you deserve something, it is right that you get it After five hours on your feet you deserve a break. I work hard and I think I deserve to be well paid. • If a thing deserves something, such as your time, attention , you should give time or attention to it. • That is a matter that deserves further consideration. • Deserve more/better • He has worked very hard for the company and deserves more.

  21. With the possible exception of another world war, a giant asteroid, or an incurable plague, global warming may the single largest threat to our planet.

  22. spew • To pour out, especially quickly and violently Cars spewing black exhaust fumes. He spewed out/forth what he had learned recently. • Spew …out/up (infml) vomit

  23. Carbon dioxide Methane Nitrogen oxide Part II.Our warming planet Questions to be asked: 1. How many sub-ideas are there in this part? • How is the rising concentration of greenhouse gases caused? Factories, power plant, cars burn coal and gasoline Decomposition of trash, Cattle-breeding Use of fertilizers on crops

  24. Part II.Our warming planet b. How does such concentration affect climate? Climate changes? c. Threats to human health? Slight increase in heat and rain. More intense rains and hurricanes. Glaciers are receding and rise in sea level. Hotter summers and rising temperatures. Severe flooding and more deaths . Threat to low-lying islands, such as Maldives. More cases of heat stroke and deaths; more hospital admissions for those with respiratory problems. Spreading of diseases, such as malaria.

  25. Part III. Taking Actions Questions to be asked: What are the actions that should be taken to cope with global warming according to the text? • Reducing the emission of heat-trapping gases. • Mitigate the impacts of global warming through careful planning. • Adopt policies that encourage the use of alternative and clean fuels, and stop deforestation.

  26. Test for key words 9.

  27. Readings and Videos Suggested • National Geographic - Inspiring People to Care About the Planet Since 1888 http://www.nationalgeographic.com/ • The Great GlobalWarming Swindle http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/0pz75uSxoGk

  28. Assignment Research and Speech What we can do to reduce greenhouse gases.
