OAA NURSING EDUCATION INITIATIVES • OAA provides funding and oversight toa number of VA nursing training programs: • VETERANS AFFAIRS NURSING ACADEMIC PARTNERSHIP (VANAP) • VANAP-Undergraduate Education • VANAP-Graduate Education • NURSING RESIDENCY PROGRAMS • Post-Baccalaureate Nurse Residency (PBNR) • Nurse Practitioner Residency (NPR) • NURSING SUB-SPECIALTYTRAINEE POSITIONS

VETERANS AFFAIRS NURSING ACADEMIC PARTNERSHIPS (VANAP) • 5-year Pilot Program • Two distinct pathwayswith a special focus either on undergraduate (VANAP-U) or graduate (VANAP-GE)education • Objectives: • Increasingstudent enrollment and clinical training capacity; • Enhancing VA VANAP faculty competencies and professional scholarship; • Promoting innovation in education; • Revising academic curriculum to include Veteran specific health problems; • Developing Interprofessional education; • DevelopingVeteran-centric practice and education initiatives. • Twenty-four (24) VANAP programs were/are funded by OAA: • Seventeen (17) VANAP-U sites, including eight Phase I VANAP legacy sites, which maintained the program beyond the five-year period of central funding • Seven (7) VANAP-GE sites.

  5. VETERANS AFFAIRS NURSING ACADEMIC PARTNERSHIPSUndergraduate Education (VANAP-U) Currently, nine (9) OAA-funded VANAP-U academic partnerships between VA facilities and schools of nursing (SON) with baccalaureate degree programs:

VETERANS AFFAIRS NURSING ACADEMIC PARTNERSHIPSGraduate Education (VANAP-GE) • Focus on development of a Psychiatric Mental Health and Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner education, areas most affected by the current shortage of skilled Primary Care and Mental Health providers. • Seven (7) VANAP-GE academic partnerships between VA facilities and SON:

VA POST-BACCALAUREATE NURSE RESIDENCY • Seventeen (17) Post-Baccalaureate Nurse Residency Sites (6-10 residents per site) • AY 2012-2013/Cohort I: Boston, Charleston, Gainesville, Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City • AY 2013-2015/Cohort II and III: Ann Arbor, Atlanta, Madison, Milwaukee, Mt. Home, Providence • AY 2015-2016/ Cohort IV: Miami, Northern California, North Texas • AY 2017-2018/ Cohort V: Birmingham, Portland, West Haven • National Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) Accreditation: • Eleven (11) sites are accredited • One (1) site is awaiting an accreditation decision • Five (5) sites are preparing for application/onsite evaluation.

VA NURSE PRACTITIONER RESIDENCY • Six (6) Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Residency Sites ( up to 4 residents per site) • AY 2013-2014: Birmingham & Charleston • AY 2014-2015: Boston & Durham • AY 2016-2017: VA Salt Lake City & San Francisco VA Health Care Systems • Four (4) Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Residency Sites ( up to 4 residents per site) • AY 2016-2017: Atlanta VAMC, Durham VAMC, Washington DC VAMC, & White River Junction VAMC

  9. NURSING SUB-SPECIALTYTRAINEE POSITIONS • Nursing-Administration • Nursing- Clinical Nurse Leader • Nursing- Clinical Nurse Specialist • Nursing-Nurse Anesthesia • Nursing- Nurse Practitioner Trainee • Nursing- Post-Masters Nurse Practitioner Fellowship
