Motoring

Learning Objective

To investigateelectric motors.

Some

  • Explain why practical motors have a radial field produced by curved pole pieces. (A/B)

Most

  • describe how this is achieved using a split ring commutator. (B)

All

  • explain how the forces on a current carrying coil in a magnetic field produce a turning effect. (C)

  • All – explain how the forces on a current carrying coil in a magnetic field produce a turning effect. (C)

  • Most - describe how this is achieved using a split ring commutator. (B)

Robot wars.

How do the robots work?

What devices are needed to make them so agile and effective?

To investigate electric motors

The split ring commutator has one side that is always positive and one side that is always negative. The current through the coil changes direction every half rotation so that it rotates in the same direction.

  • All – explain how the forces on a current carrying coil in a magnetic field produce a turning effect. (C)

  • Most - describe how this is achieved using a split ring commutator. (B)

Why don’t we see more electric cars on the roads?

In small groups, come up with a list of advantages and disadvantages of electric cars.
