  7. La flor de Nochebuena(Thepoinsettia) The poinsettia is a Mexican Flower; the Aztecs called it “Cuitlaxachitl” or false flower. Today it is known in Mexico as the flower of Christmas Eve because it is abundant during the Christmas celebration. Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Joel R. P. Poinsett (1779-1851) the first U.S. ambassador in Mexico, this beautiful flower is known in the United States, and has been justly named in his honor.Mr. Poinsett was the first to send the flower to his country in the variety of its colors: the color pink, maroon, gold, red, yellow and white. Nevertheless he cultivated or grew them for many years at his home in the state of North Carolina. The states of California, Florida, and Louisiana, possess an excellent climate for the cultivation of the poinsettia, and the cold locations cultivate them with careful attention in greenhouses, in order that we can enjoy their beauty during the holidays.
