  2. Johann Sebastian Bach • Born in 1685 in Eisenach, Germany • His family were musicians • Lost both of his parents when he was 9 years old. • Bach was praised for his soprano voice and sang in the church. • Bach lived with a cousin after parents death.

  3. Bach • Became an organ virtuoso. • Was called to be organist for Duke of Weimar. • Moved to Arnstadt to be organist at NeueKirche. He didn’t spend a lot of time with Boys Choir as he wanted to spend all his time playing the organ. • In 1705 after a street fight with a bassoon player, Bach traveled to Lubeck to study with Dieter Buxtehude.

  4. Bach to the Future • Bach returned to Arnstadt and used his new organ technique and confused the congregation. • Bach moved to Muhlhausen and started to write vocal works. This may have been due to the choir at his new church had a rich tradition. • Bach was very eager and ambitious to improve his financial and social standing. • Married Maria Barbara.

  5. Bach to the Future II • Bach returns to Weimar (1708 – 1717) • Member of Chamber Orchestra and Organist to the Court. • Due to a feud within the court Bach left Weimar and went to Cothen where he held the position of Kappelmeister. • Bach’s days were completely devoted to music. • Bach traveled with the Prince on extensive journeys and upon returning one time found that his wife (Maria Barbara) had died leaving 4 motherless children.

  6. Bach Again • Bach met a singer on his travel, Anna Magdalena who he married when he was 36 and she 20. • Anna and Johann were married for 28 years and had 13 children together, plus his original 4. Wow! • Wrote one of his famous works…The Brandenburg Concertos

  8. Bach to the End • Due to many dimly lit nights of composing, Bach’s eye sight started to weaken. He had some surgeries to repair but this only led to him becoming blind. • On the morning of the 28th of July, 1750, he woke up to find he could bear strong light again, and see quite clearly. • That same day he had a stroke, followed by a severe fever. He died 'in the evening, after a quarter to nine, in the sixty-fifth year of his life, yielding up his blessed soul to his saviour'.

  9. Still Moving in Death • When St John's Church was rebuilt in 1894 a few Leipzig scholars and Bach admirers succeeded in having what were believed to be the composer's bones exhumed. Partial identification was established by a series of anatomical and other tests. The bones were laid to rest in a stone sarcophagus next to the poet Gellert in the vaults of the Johanniskirche, and many people went to pay homage to this tomb until the church was destroyed by bombs in WW2. Once more his remains were rescued and in 1949 buried, this time in the altar-room of the Thomaskirche where they remain to this day.

  10. Interesting Bach Things • Anna Magdalena was a copyist for he husband and after a while her handwriting began to look like his..maybe she wrote some of his music! • Bach composed 300 cantatas, B minor mass, St. Matthews Passion. • Anna Magdalena never remarried and died a bag lady in Leipzig. • Some of Bach’s children had success to…William Friedman, Carl Phillip Emanuel (CPE), Johann Christian.
