  4. 1798-Congress provided land for Canadian refugees that helped the American colonies during the Revolutionary War.

  5. During the War, British troops destroyed property along the sea coast of Connecticut. In order to repay colonists for their losses, Connecticut gave these colonists 500,000 acres of land.

What is a Bounty Land Grant? • A grant of land from a government. • A reward to repay for the risks and hardships endured in service of their country. • Usually in a military related capacity. • Common long-standing practice in the British Empire. • Only victory brought reward. • Effective propaganda technique to support war

  7. Virginia established the Military District between the Scioto and Little Miami Rivers. These lands were available to veterans of the Virginia and Maryland Militias who had served during the American Revolution.

  8. In 1796, Congress provided 2.5 million acres to pay officers and soldiers for their services during the Revolutionary War.

How to Obtain Military Land Grants • Rather involved process • Must have proof of military services. • Receive a warrant for an amount of land based on their rank and length of service. • No specific pieces of land given, just amount of land. • Assumed veterans would travel all the way to Ohio to locate their tract of land.

Purchased Land • The federal government sold large portions of land to private companies and individuals. • The Ohio Company purchased 1.5 million acres in southeastern Ohio • John Cleves Symmes purchased about 330,000 acres between the Great Miami and the Little Miami rivers. • Most of the remaining land was public land owned by the US government. This was known as “Congress Land” and was available for purchase by individuals.

  11. Ohio’s rapid population growth was a direct result of soldiers serving in the Revolutionary War.
