HIST 4957/5957-001 Playing Doctor: Medicine and Health in FilmVictoria MeyerPre-Summer Session12:30 - 4:30 pm MTWR We will examine how aspects of health and the medical field, from illness to patients to medical practitioners, have been portrayed in film. Our aim is to learn how different societies have viewed disease and medicine, as well as how films can be used as sources. We will explore topics such as mental illness, dying, disabilities, eugenics, epidemics such as AIDS, cancer, etc. through films including Elephant Man (1980) and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975). In order to facilitate our discussions of the films viewed in class, there will be short outside readings assigned and several short writing assignments.
