  4. The problem 4 • Increased traffic jams and environmental pressure • Shift from water to road • Reliability of inland navigation decreases • Congestion and increased waiting times at locks and ports

  5. Policy objectives 5 5 • Sustainable transport • Inprove position of inland navigation in the transport chain; • Shift from road to water; • Benefits for the environment by shifting to rail and water. Program objectives • Reliable voyage times • Maintain safety level • Fast and reliable incident management • Improve the use of infrastructure • Reduce administrative burden • Improve quality of the basic information

  8. Track 3 Research - Logistic challenges A new logistical system Challenge Knowledge creation on how to optimise traffic management on Dutch waterways: • How transport operators can be stimulated and persuaded to make the choice for IWT instead of road? • What new logistical concepts can strengthen this goal and accommodate the increase IWT between Rotterdam and the hinterland? • How economically feasible are they? • And what kind of (economic) policy should be considered to implement them? Actions to be taken The current logistical system

  9. Track 1: Basic governmental services • Implementation of a Vessel Traffic Management Supporting System VOS (RIS system) • Vessel Traffic Management Centres of the future • ICT on governmental vessels supporting Vessel Traffic Management
